Recon mission to Pt Sturt.

I have looked at this spot a few times when on family drives but have never had the chance to sail it.  The forecast had changed over the last few days and a light to moderate NW was predicted.  I did a ring around and people were either busy or weren't answering their phones.  Looked like this was going to be solo in an offshore breeze and with my run lately I was going to be very cautious.

On the drive down it was blowing 20-25 with huge clouds of salt lake dust puffing up from every dry bed.  It was howling when I got to Pt Sturt and I walked the 250m down to the waters edge getting my heels sandblasted.  I walked out to check the depth and it had lots of ribbed sandbars perpendicular to the bank but deepened about 30m out.

Got back to the car and rigged the 7 and headed down with the 92, as is usual it dropped of just as I hit the water and I just planed on the first run but not on the way back.  Swam/spacewalked my way back to the bank from about 150m out in neck deep water.

Went in and got my 66cm slalom and gluged around a bit and then it stayed at 15-20 for a while so I headed out on the 92 again with the JP SIII 36 fin.  I didn't dare risk heading away from the bank for a squirt as it was too risky.

The runs were to the first channel marker about 1Nm from the launch, there is a second 2Nm out but the spit is almost fully submerged.  I think there may have been a bit of a wind tide helping to cover it but this would be a good run for hours with a few other out for backup.

If heading out launch at the 2 black bouys and sail north as there are fishing nets perpendicular to the beach out from the these bouys.  You could sail south as the bank looks good but the cliffs may make it gusty, although the beach is far enough out that it might be more constant.

All in all I am glad I have finally sailed Pt Sturt, it has good potential on N-NW-W.

Nice work guys.

Tim, great to see your report. Sorry I couldn't make it, was hoping to get out tomorrow, but even that forecast is now changing - it's been too long....aarrgh!!

Hey Chris, I hope the next time you get out will be worth the wait.

At least we now have some locations with speed potential.

1 down, 4 more to check out!

PS The photos are taken from an 8m cliff, don't let anything blow over!

Great stuff TimCool.

I had my niece's birthday party so couldn't make it and after great news about Mandy's latest scan promised not to go this weekendLaughing.  Pt sturt looks good mate - can't wait to try it outTongue out.  Exciting that we may have some speed spots lurking out there local.  How deep is it further out?  Any star droppers?  Just checking out google earth it looks like there maybe a southern bank around the corner.  Will have to check it out soon....

Hey Carl,

Great news about the scan - Family first.

I couldn't do too much depth testing but it is about 1.75m deep about 40-50m out but there are also some 30cm deep ridges that pop out from the beach occasionally.  If I found any *droppers you would have heard about it! Head to the channel marker to be safe.  There was flatter water behind the middle bar that is fully exposed but I wasn't powered enough and didn't have enough time to check the bank there.  The walk and the bank are nice and sandy without mud, in the deeper water there is ankle deep mud but nothing like boggys 1/2 metre.  The water level to the south around the corner very shallow and there is no access as well as cliffs.  The beauty of Pt Sturt is a big carpark & clean wind.  It will be easier to glug back to shore if the wind drops out if it is not dead square(NW-NNW).  This is probably the 5th best spot I have on my list but the easiest to access.  We will have to have a team session there soon!

I have number 2 on the way in June so am trying to make the most of my TOW until then.
