Port Douglas, QLD, AU Bad end to a good seasion..Got to beach for happy hr, wind looked good, decided to put big  North rig cranked down hard, on 97lt Isonic' turbo duck'in anticipation of a good hard session, this was most likely my last sail for the year due to other comitiments so wanted to try and go out with maybe a PB of some decription..was just settling in to my first run and punched it hard into a18kt southeast breeze  as i do, about 1.5km out and thats when the fun stopped'..Yep you guessed it,mast broke..exploded is probably a better way of describing it just above the boom....Bloody long swim home dragging a heap of bustered ass gear, followed by a bloody long walk dragging  a heap of bustered ass gear.. The bit that realy annoys me is that was the last time i has going to use that mast, as it has done three hard seasions and was going to be retired..When i got back to the car park my wing man Andrew was there with my new 'North Platium mast'...What are the chances... Having trouble being happy at the moment...Think its time for a Burbon...Ed

Same here as Snags Ed, got sick of swimming in. I still have my first RDM, an 8 year old 460 Ezzy which I had been using on all my sails as in my 5.9, 6.8 and 7.8. Got my self a new Loft RDM with my last 6.8 and use that with my 5.8 also but untill donating my 7.8 I was still using the Ezzy for that. A lot of bla bla but just saying go for a RDM, cheaper in long run and safer Wink

Ed, good to hear you got out of the scrap ok...not fun. I don't want to jinx myself, but I have never broken any of my SDM masts.(70%) and my original KILWELL from the early 90's is still going strong...now watch my posts over the weekend, what's the bet I have a swim home...

Hey Ed, look on the positive - you made it to 8000km with that session (even if half of it was swimming).  Another + is it didn't happen out on the outer edge of Arlington reef with no-one knowing you were even out there in the first place.  I'd still have nightmares if it was me .........Cam?

Fang, That seal laughing in your avatar - is it forwards projecting to this weekend? Wink

Yer thanks guys..''for feeling sorry for me'' The RDM mast are the way of the future for me..But my mate Andrew just sold me a almost brend new North Platium mast ,has only been used twice for $300 bucks..was keen to try it as it is the recomended mast for my North sails, might just do one season on it than change... Got a ding in the side of my new board which i will have to fix, think i got it when i threw it at a tree in the car park after carrying it and broken rig 2km up the beach.. Hey Firie when are we going to see you on the water again??? Hope everyone gets a sail this weekend...Cheers Ed..

I'm waiting for some wind Eddy, in SA heading west.

The reason I went to RDM was because of a near new North mast, mine broke after a few uses 2k off shore in 25 knot wind, it was a bloody nightmare in the wind and sweel, lost half my gear and have scars on my bicepts from the boards non skid. Next time I saw Troppo he said, for F sake you stupid old bastard get RDMs like he'd told me before, best advice as that was my last broken mast 9 years ago. Ed you sail open ocean and you go a long way off shore, listen to Snags and me Wink

Mixed reports from who, all my sails last 9 years have been cambered except for my old 5.9 Loft O2 and all on RDM's, if you're going to try and go faster than Lockwood the SDM might be better, if you sail way off shore in choppy gusty ocean get the RDM. My view as always, get RDM's and if they don't suit your sail get new sails Laughing While I'm on it, don't get race sails either, stick with slalom Wink

Hey thanks Firie think I will put RDM mast on wish list as I don't use race sails and don't go very fast.
