Seaford to Port Melbourne......Across the bay for cancer event

Spotti and I on Formula boards.....wind filled in so I played safe and rigged 7.5 as it has to be 6 years since I was on a Formula board and had a long way to go.  Of coarse the wind dropped out as soon as I carried the board to the beach.  Any way we took off and decided just to slog and see what happened..... 100 meters in I decide to hook up and relax while I was slogging.... doh... no harness.  Back to the car get harness then off again. Spotti waited for me so the other guys had a fair head start    Slog , slog , slog  gust get planing....  Spotti on an 8.7 planing as well.... brrr drop off the plane, Spotti has way more power with the 8.7 and is off.... seeya!!!

Slog, slog, slog for 3 or 4 km then a gust.... Ok we are away.   I Sailed one tack from Seaford to about 4 or 5 km off Black Rock, out near the parked container ships so decided to gybe.  Was pretty comfy on the 7.5 but the seas were building so had to concentrate on not digging the nose.  Harness lines are too far forward and my front hand is starting to cramp so decided to hit the beach and make a few ajustments close to Sandringham.   Off again, getting windier but OK.... starting to feel the back leg pretty bad. Gybe again and see one of the other guys and a few kites.  We sail together to Brighton Breakwater then gybe for Station Pier.  Really getting fatiged now, the wind is stronger and the Formua board is starting to be not much fun with a 70 fin in it.  Do a bit of a tail walk then over the front... Bugger.  Get going again and legs cramping badly, really starting to do it tough and feeling my age.

Getting close now and the waves are steep, board really misbehaving. Bang, lose it again. Water start and decide to put another gybe in as I am struggling to go that low, short dig, gybe and now the race for home.

Made it, colapse on the beach.... yeh ha.    That was fun    I think....

Great event.......  Combined with the Sup event nearly $100,000 raise raised for te Cancer Counci of Victoria.

Next year guys.... we need more Windsurfers to support this.  Challenge yourself and do it!!!

Here is my track from the Across the Bay for Cancer event.   It took me 1 hour 40, that was with the first 20 minutes not planing, 2 offs and a short Pit stop at Black Rock to adjust my harness lines.  Reckon if I coud have planed from the start and got a bit fitter / practiced on the Formula board close to an hour is doable.

Thanks Tricky,  good learning experience for me.  I learned a lot about the best gear to do it on, not sure formula was ideal as the wind got over 20 knots for half the trip. A big slalom/ freerace board would be better, just need a center strap option for when your leg gets tired going deep downwind.  Formula with a smaller fin around 60 cm probably still OK.Spotti had a 58 in his Formula with an 8.7 and I think that was a better setup, I woozed it as I was woried about my ability to hold an 8.7 for that long.   I could have gone bigger with the sail if I had a smaller fin, would have been able to sail deeper and the board would have behaved better. The guys on big slalom boards were a bit faster though.  Next year!!!
