Shoal Bay, Princess Royal Harbour, WA, AU

Tabou 3s 96l, KA Koncept 5.8, JP 26 Weed Wave

As I didn't manage to get out yesterday decided to give it a try this morning before the tide got too high & the fronts arrived. By the time I was rigged the wind was really starting to build & the tide was already a bit higher than I wanted, for the locals the water was well over the big metal boxes with only about a meter of beach left.

Didn't take long to realise I had way too big a board for the chop. Went out to the weed bank to try & find some flatter water. It was definitely a little flatter but still just short of knee high chop & once you got to the either end of the weed it was more mid thigh & a bit confused. Wind continued to build it was easily another 5 or so knots on what the airport reads & ended up well overpowered in the gusts.  Discovered the unhooked poo stance on quite a few occassions,...

Next time in similar conditions I think I'll just take the Starboard Acid & small wave sails, tide needs to be lower for the weed to smooth the water out enough for me to use the cambered gear.

When I saw the cloud start to build up over the hills, knew it was time to pike it. Timed it perfectly, all packed up & in the car just as the rain arrived, win! Last time I saled there was a cow wandering down the road this time there were a few Slender Sunfish washed up on the edge of the harbour, think the colder water may have proved to mauch for them.

Fangy's with Pat Malone. Much nicer than yesterday and managed to double my distance before showing the backbone of a jellyfish and collapsing on the shore.

As per usual the forecast was wildly optimistic, but because Captain Calm had decided that sailing with only one lens in his spectacles was myopic, I had no bad influences when choosing sail size. 1994F2 Party Barge310, Delta 23,Koncept 7.5.was pretty much on the money for most of the session. the breeze was more consistent than yesterday, but still was typical winter fare with some rather large holes at times.

Things I learnt today. Seagulls do not stand on water. If you are sailing into the sun and spy Jonathon Livingstone Seagull standing nonchalantly on the water ahead, it is best to alter course. If you fail to do so, Jonathon will take off and watch and laugh as you spear a rather large weedburg. The Delta rake saved me from a trip around the handle bars, but the tug on the fin still provides a sphincter moment.

I also learnt that not all weedburgs are stationary. For sure it was one of the bigger rays I have seen for a while!

All in all, twas good fun on the barge smashing some small chop and rejoicing in another sail - no doubt about it, Top ten Fangy DayLaughing

Nicely done in those conditions Jeremy, is that your first outing with the 5.8? Not good conditions to try it out in I guess.

Yes it was Mike, hardly ideal conditions to use a new sail but we both survived. At least I didn't rig the 6.8m Switchblade, now that would have been interesting!

Mike can you check my file that I've posted to KA72 when you have time please. I've just had a look & can see a few 2sec gaps that may possibly be in the 5x10sec. I'll email you the gaps I'm concerned about.

Yeah Pat has no standards at all, a bit like Wazzagenderconfused. You two should have a ball singing Monty Python's Lumberjack song on your road trip together.🦄

Thanks all, someone told me when I 1st started this not to make too sizeable jumps with PB's & I think I'm doing a fine job of that!

Well done on the PBs in trickier than normal conditions Morts. I reckon familiarity with the kit you use is a big benefit in the go faster game so any time on water iuseful

We have had sme great wind here, it is just a pity I am at work :-)
