I thought it would be a bump and jump sesh. It was more like a survival session. As I aproached the water I realised the beach break was huge! I should have launched from the pass rather than the beach. Eventually made it out but it was the most confused water I have ever sailed in.

JP MAGIC RIDE, NP RYDE 6.5, SELECT FREERIDE 35.

Great late sail, did not get in the water to after 4, so missed the best of the wind, but still a good sail on freeride gear.

Eric, I sailed Byron Bay for over 15 years, it is a very hard place to sail when the wind gets up, but it is also one of the best sailing spots i have every sailed, always launched from the pass.

Hi Geoff. Thanks for the feedback. That is some sound advice on what it is like. Wish you were still here so I had someone to sail with.WinkI'll launch from the pass next time its big like today. I have had some ripper sails in Byron too, especially when its more NE and smaller swell. I reckon it would be real fun on the lighter northerlies with the big gear too. Today had a very large south swell and 20-25knots(on the gauge) from the NNW. There was a huge sweep from the north that met the sweep from the pass and that formed the mother of all rips. What a washing machine! I felt lucky I didn't drop my gear in the middle of it. The beach was closed a couple days back with a GWS too so that doesn't help the nerves. I look forward to meeting you one day to discuss the sailing around here.
