Wednesday 17^th August – bike *** sunny – Around Felixstowe

With yet more breeze forecast, the third day of easterly winds but with a midday high tide it’s best in the afternoon so I was in no hurry to get down to The Dip. So Mag and I went on an 8-mile ride along the prom in the sunshine, it was easy heading towards the dock but hard going coming back into a head wind! I was beginning to worry as my 7.8 is being repaired. It was then exercises in the garden, breakfast and a walk up town taking in the prom again, it was nice to see the beach busy with people enjoying the nice weather.

For the second day in the row I took Mag to The Dip so she could walk home, sadly the good breeze of the morning failed to build and was only showing 10/13 kts :( I rigged my usual lightwind gear 8.5 on the 147 but waited an hour for the wind to build. With the gauge now showing winds gusting to 15 kt so I decided to give it a try. It was just windy enough to slow plan but I had replaced my rope to the front of my boom which was not tight enough so landed on kite beach by the golf club to fix it and meet another windsurfer down here on holiday from Gloucester who was doing some lightwind shortboard freestyle. Again there was some smooth water by kite beach but not enough wind so headed back to the van as three more windsurfers arrived including Ian Clarke and Chris Phillips:) The wind had fallen light so had my snack and then went out again as the wind increased in fraction. I started to break the 20 kt barrier as I beat up to kite beach again flying in the flat water and gybing right by the beach. After making nearly 25 kts in the River Deben yesterday in not much wind I decided to try it again, it was fun sailing over the wild water and into the mega fast out going current! In the light winds I struggled to make against the tide and couldn’t plan on the way out either:( I had a couple of runs before heading out to sea and back to the van as the winds dropped again. Good news after yesterday’s hic-up with my gps, it recorded this session:) So that windsurfing three days in a row covering approx.. 85 n/miles !!! :)
