S/blade 6.8, JP Slalom 66w + Fangy Fin Decrep Mod

Wasn't over enthused when I arrived wnd looked dodgy, weather looked dodgy, sailor looked decidedly dodgy. It was last day off work & the tide was right to test the Fangy Fin so out I went.

Still have not quite got the fin sitting flush to the board, there is about a 2-3mm gap between the fillet & the board (both JP & Sonic) but I'm unsure if it's something near the fillet or the depth of the fin overall, so reluctant to get too file happy. Having said that the fin performed really well in the conditions, much better than I imagine the Delta would have given past experience.

Warning fin waffle below...

Was able to drive through the white ribbon weed with just a little tug noticeable, only when I got up close to the NM run did you feel the other weed but that stuff is thick as & sitting just below the surface. I was a little underpowered but still on the plane most of the time but was still able to hold the height ok & when the wind did pick up I could point quite high with ease. Only had 1 proper tail let go & there was a couple of times you could feel it start to crab a bit but that was easy to rectify. Should have taken photo's of the fin before so I could notice any change, there is a couple of little notches on the last 5cm but can't remember if they were there previously or not Embarassed

Better fun than I expected Cool

Fangy, think I might do a Pepe & keep the fin Tongue out

Go hard with the angle grinder Morts. Because the fillet can take load, the fit of the tenon is not as important as in a normal fin - so grind away! ( nothing a bit bog can't fix anyway :-) Also, it's really important the fillet is flush so it can do its job. ( especially for the weed catcher tip to start flicking the weed down.) It will be interesting to see if you can pick the difference once the fillet is fitting properly. Thanks for taking the time to try it out for me too.

Jeremy, The base may be too deep, can you use a pencil or something to gauge the dpeth of your box against the depth of the base?

My chinook boxes are all most deep tuttle depth, so I wouldn't notice the extra length. If the depth isn't an issue, grind/sand off the back edge, it's shorter and takes less effort. As Ross says, doesn't matter if it's a tad loose, the fillet does the work.

The chinook boxes are imperial to exact tuttle specs, your boards may have the "almost tuttle" metric specs.

Oh yes great hour in the conditions, pity there was no wind here.

Nice going Morts, I tried fangys fin a while back and it felt great, I was only using a 5.5m sail though, Is it same size fun Ross?
