Soooooooooooooo frustrated trying to get the new Acer laptop to boot the live Ubuntu CD. Dot suggested quietly that it might be a good idea to go for a sail.

What a clever lady!!!!!!

The filleted fin was waiting for it's inaugural test drive and the conditions looked about right for it.

Arrived at Liptons to find Hardie about ready to launch, and yes looked good for the 6.6, 53 and fin.

Went for a downwind run straight to Pt Grey where hardie appeared to be playing, but then he passed me going the other way back to liptons.

This was my fastest run, in the flat section just before you get to the channel on the western side.

Didn't seem a lot of action at Pt Grey, so went back and joined Hardie at liptons who was trying alphas. I certainly wasn't getting much in the way of speed so I joined him. Found it hard to come out of the gybes powered up, although I looked for a gust to gybe in, there didn't seem to be as much wind coming out of the gybe as I had going into it!

However after yesterday it was a very pleasant, relaxing sail. Medium tide, 15 to 18kts, made for some flatish water.

AND the fillett seems to work, before this mod, the fin only felt good on one tack, on the other tack the fin felt almost half the size. Now it feels solid in both ditrections, still worked well in gusts and lulls, enough lift to get the windward rail nicely up.

Coodanup, WA, AU

Pat F Race 140, RRd FW 7.8, MUF Delta 24

After the dissapointment of not being able to get out yesterday, in desperation headed down to coodanup in hope of a late afternoon breeze. After about 45 minutes of sitting there wondering what the hell i was doing and on the verge of going home a few white caps appeared. Wanted to rig the 8.6 but didnt think the fin would be big enough, and it wouldnt have been. I struggled to get and stay up wind with the 7.8. In the end though I had a great time reasonably powered up most of the time but not enough to go to deep off the wind. First time on flat water with the big battleship, more like a cruise ship today. Loved it. The 19.98 Alpha doesnt represent how well it Jybes, done some realy quick ones today but the 50m is obviously outside its optimum turning circle.

Happy birthday Hardzman Cool

Surprised you guys got a sail,  I was watching the wind here and checking Seabreeze graphs with no joy, ended up going to the beach at 3.45 just in case but it was lucky to be 10 knts Frown

Rogerisaw you out on my snotgobbler taxi runs back and forth this arvo - you certainly looked to be cruising around happily when I saw you. And that's a real nice PB for an hour in today's breeze! Well done Laughing

Cap'n, happy to hear the fillet worked for you - now just keep sanding that cut-out  ( John I have a demo fin here, or you can pinch the other one off Pas when he isn't looking - but be warned they are deceptively grunty for their size :-)

Firie I measured 15 to 18 at liptons after my sail. There was plenty of wind at Avalon, Pas said there wasn't much at Halls head either.

Jonski, here's my fin.

fin filleted

Fangy's idea, he's created 3 aliminium versions that a few people have tried and been impressed with them. Pepe has made a very close clone of Fangys fins in Carbon and says it also works well. Instead of copying fangys design I've just added  filetts to one of my 55deg fins I wasn't all that happy with.

It looks a lot like the way we used to stick fins onto surfboards in the old days.

I have my own theory about what's going on here, but can't think of a way to test it.

But my feeling is, that it's only worth doing on big heavily raked fins.

Thanks Ross, I certainly wasn't expecting any pb,s today. Saying that, I didn't stop at all and never fell in. As I was on my own 😞 there was no on to stop n have a chat with.

Iwouldn't mind trying the fangyfin in the cruise ship one day please Ross. The delta wasn't doing it for me today.

No worries Roger. The biggest one I have at the moment is a 24. Pepe has used a 7.8 with it happily. Just bail me up, or whoever had the other one and have a crack. The fin is for shallow weedy water on lighter days, it has too much lift to be really slick - thus far I haven't got it past 36 knots, but I reckon that is good going for a fin that holds a 7.8 sail in a knee deep water 👍😄

That's good speed for big gear. I know I haven't used them much yet but when I get up around 30kn with the deltas they seem to want to keep changing the direction of the board and hard to keep in a straight line. Weird feeling.

Not sure if I know Pas yet, but if he wants to let one go for a while I'd love to try it.
