7.8m OD - Excocet RS4 - 39cm Sting pointer
Usually I'd call this a real dud of a session but I wanted to suss out the RS4 to see if it can replace my beloved Xcross and for that I needed c 5kts of wind and to be overpowered in chop and this session delivered both!
Glassy when we got there but the S came down the lake- it was dead flat so a pity it only came in at about 8kts..got planing a few times and enough wind on one tack to see what the board could do upwind in a 10-12kt puff.It then switched off and turned ESE..I was surpised and fell in when it headed me and the sail was on the wrong side to uphaul. Luckily I was close to shore so I just swam in. I practised some low wind gybing and watched Lyds and Jeff slogging out in the middle trying to get in..
It came back in and was starting to get ok then the wind came in with a vengeance ahead of the rain...Survival sail in with the 7.8m ( 5.6m - 80 ltre board would have been good here)...Would have loved to bear off but I would have got splattered over the front..
Bugger - the best wind for several months and we had the wrong gear.. Lyds went out for a few tries but he was very overpowered so I played it safe and sat it out..
The board is less forgiving in lightwind gybes than the xcross . The xcross is pleasant for a float in 5-10kts of wind whereas this one will be hard work but I think once I get some decent wind I will enjoy it. It seemed to get up and float over the chop on one reach in 12-14kts..
I'll probably keep all the boards for a while then decide whether to sell the 115xcross and maybe the RS2...maybe...or not..
It was crap wind but I still enjoyed the session..
