Fangy's World of Way Too Much Weed.

After Round 1 snotgobbler taxi duties were finished, I rushed down to the Golf Course out the front here to try and squeeze in a decent sail. I rigged around at Nairns and I am not sure if I seriously misjudged the wind strength but I got it hopelessly wrong. I wanted to try out the FangyFin24 in the QEII and slapped on the Koncept8.5 to go with it.  I launched and went for 100 metres or so thinking I was pretty well on the money with my choice. Then a decent gust launched me into action and things got even hairier when I realised that the fishing boat in front of my was pulling a rather large net. I only realised it because of the mob of pelicans scoring a free feed in math the edges of the net. Sphincter level evasive action and I missed everything. Phew! Now to sit back and cruise.

That lasted for at least 5 seconds before I realised the wind was getting stronger. I stopped to tighten everything up and had a quick confab with Pas. In front of me was a waterlogged golf course green. Time for a nauti of smooth.

The only problem was the weed was just too thick and I couldn’t get flying. I had the 8.5 loaded to it’s maximum, and was pushing on the fin with all my strength but until the drag was too strong. Fabulously smooth but frustratingly slow. I lined up a second run through a section that was less heavily weeded and thinking that breeze is  getting pretty damn strrong. With only mirror and no ripples to see in front of me I wasn’t sure if I was trimmed correctly, but coming towards me I saw Pas get unceremoniously flattened. A few seconds the gust hit me and I just held on…but I still couldn’t get any serious speed, the weed drag was too much until eventually something had to give. My sail let go up the top.

Happily the duct tape repair of Scissorhands early work was top class and it held the top panel together for a while, but eventually the only mono film left up top was the bit under the duct tape.  Of course this happened about as far away from base as I could be. So the rest of my session was a dogged slog back up hill with the incessant chatter of flapping monofilm.

On the upside, it was excellent exercise. If I had rigged right there were some good little squirts of water to be had,  but overall it’s just too damn thick with weed unless there is a high tide.  I really hope the Mobbers at Liptons had less weed and managed to reap the rewards.

Peel Inlet, WA, AU. Sailing E to SEly variable wind, low tide and thick ropey weed. Started with Falcon113/FW7.0/MUF Delta24. While it was a bit on/off, Simon, Mike and I were having fun doing runs down a runway within the weed down past Ward's Point. Speeds were probably reduced by frequent tugs on the fin by the rope weed. I managed 32kts with that combo.  THe wind picked up a bit after lunch so I took a gamble with the CA52. Wind kept going for a while and it was a great fun hooning around on my fav board. My best nauty at Liptons, so happy with that Smile

Jonski and Stroppo headed out as we headed in. Hope you got some good wind guys

OK,...  so who orded the extra helping of weed with there crabs !!???  and the water was a strange colour, in parts, as the sun shon

through it looked a deep red,,,,  ha!!!  Back to the weed, it was a lot of fun in the soomth but progres through the thick sections was slow

going. The wind started of a bit light so got out the 7.5 ka kon, f2 SX-R 58 and el60 20cm weedy, and eaven this fin had trouble going

over some of the "bergs".

Liptons, Isonic 110, Warp 7.0 and Kestral 22. Another day full of firsts for me today. I hadn't been to liptons in a couple of months and its hardly recognisable as the same place. First time using the warp 7.0 and thought it went well although I need more downhaul and less outhaul. Also first time with the kestrel on the 110 isonic. The fin went well with the 7.0 but I think it will struggle with anything bigger. First time sailing in weed today and wow what a strange experience took some getting used to but huge grin was in place most of the session. I spent most of the time sailing with Mike and stroppo having scared off sludge and Stretch. Simply a pleasant arvo on the water. 😁

65cm board at the start 53cm board after lunch, used the 6.2 koncept and filleted 21cm weedy with both boards.

Great to have Simon, Rob and later John and Strop for company. I was about to give up, but strop pointed out the wind was getting better, so I had a cuppa and a biscuit to revive me and joined John and Strop, for what was probably the most consistent session

Day didn't work out quite as planned, I hoped to do a big distance to improve my personal ranking this year. Forecast looked good, also looked great when I arrived at liptons. Plenty of flat water, on shore 15kt ave and 17 knt gusts SE. so long runs in the flat to be had First few runs weren't too bad, but then the wind went very holey and it took me a whole hr to do 14km.

But the run through the channel at Ward Pt made it all worth it.

There is plenty of rope weed tha give some very aggressive tugs on the fin, but eventually I figured out the best line to avoid the worst of them.

Strange thing though, the worst rope weed is in clearer water. the really thick stuff is just very slow, with no unexpected tugs.

These numbers are from the old GT31, the watch run out of battery at 97kms, just under 7hrs on.

The watch numbers are very similar to the GT31, during the period they were both on together

JP HF 135L, NP RSR E6 6.4m, NP rs flight AL

Joined Tomski who was giving a masterful foiling demonstration just as he was calling it a day, spent some valuable time listening to Toms advise about what I had done wrong in my sent up, wasted a while looking for a misplaced alen kety as wel.

Eventually I got ready to go out Huey thought he'd take the piss and promptly kicked the wind up so the estuary was covered in whitecaps.

With a very low spring tide the wade oiut was intereting with 3/4 shin deep mud to wade through to get to the deeper water.

Eventualy got going, moving a shim to the front of the stabiliser made the lift more controlable but being overpowered led to the inevitable eating of shit on a number of occasions, decided to pack it in after 20mins.

Thanks for the Advise Tom, the stabiliser is going back on tomorow.

Had to do the responsible employee thing and stay at work and probably will tomorrow. This work thing is totally over rated.

There was no divot, it hapend in the rough, between the two greens, partly because of the rough and the intensifying gust.

Yeh I can't handel the 7.5 when it gets like that, and I was geting a bit spent by then, Tongue out

I checked out Fangys on my way to liptons and I honestly couldn't tell if you guys were having the best session ever or you were hopelessly stuck in the endless weed.

Fangy, while you're considering a repair, remember my wave sail has been at the Drs all autumm and winter and still isn't fixed.
