Windfoil, Foilville/Waylen Bay WA

With plans this arvo i stayed closer to home and tried foiling in stronger wind. Its pretty wild!

Had some sensational stacks, even managed to snap a harness line.

Wishing i'd packed the smaller wing to try, ahh well next time.

Melville Beach, WA, AU. Wind definitely kicked in nicely in Melville but snapped my boom right as the wind was getting good. Ah well, on the bright side it kind of gave away slowly just as I was coming into shore :) Way nicer than my previous equipment failures which usually ends up in tears, big swims and twisted ankles.

Forgot how much i dont like sailing at Smellville... Yes, its conveniently close to home but sooo shoppy choppy and wind is pretty inconsistent...

Regardless, great to see a few of the crew and i did get some decent speed... :) :)

Melville Beach, WA, AU

Lumpy and gusty but enough wind to end up on the 6.2 & M91 but after a close shave and rather spectacular dismount when I stopped dead on the sandbar I decided that was enough, only damage was a broken harnes line.

Fastest on the 120 Freerace with 7.0 and 29 Tribal weedspeed.

NM practice - out from the beach on port had the yacht race chop but good wind so was fastest, heading back from Point Walter on stbd had flatter water but super gusty.

The weed at Point Walter was too thick and stringy for the pointer fin.

Good turnout of Pinnas - few faces I haven't seen for a while Cool

Nice to see Pacey out there Smile

Foilville

got down to the river just as Lunny was walking in, it was hard to gauge exactly what the win was doing but Lunny said that it was full on

made my best guess on what to go out on and of course it was wrong, the wind was very strong all afternoon with a bit in the middle that got very full on

should have had a crack with the 5.1

I was hiding all afternoon right in the corner of matilda bay which was nicer, less wind, less traffic, less chop but it was quite gusty with still some big bullets coming through

i was sailing as reserved today as possible in those conditions with a foil as I have been a bit crook the last few days and was struggling with the exertion

still I got a bunch of really nice foiling jibes but missed proximity with all of them

oh well all up an ok day but not that much fun, just too full on and tiring for how I feel

5.6 refex 4, 135 JP HF, NP F4 foil with the small wing

Safety Bay, WA, AU. Such a good session, I really needed that after this week at work. On the 5.7 all day, wind was great. Didn't even notice that 100km go by, and didn't even touch the shore once! Really just so good out there today. Threw a few hours in just for backup in case anyone else had a ripper. Wicked sess. Cool

But, the day was not without drama, as I seem to be, on a session by session basis, adding to the current streak of mishap after mishap after mishap, after....Today was a fairly low impact knee to fin type deal, but enough to split it down to the fat layer. Ouch Yell Luckily it was so late in the session, it didn't really impact the day's sailing.  Lucky lucky lucky..

So, the current score board looks something like:

15 stitches in thigh - WS29

1 in ball of foot - WS29

3 in knee - WS29!!!!

This fin is going to be the death of me. I'm going to sand it into submission tomorrow I think. This has gone far enough. Now I have to get a tetanus booster shot, jeeeeez. This is just getting crazy.

21knot 100km. 3 stitches a fair price to pay me thinks. Gotta love that another day on the blue ocean Cool

Melville Beach, WA, AU

Not a bad day for the local. This session was one of 3 as my GPS watch was accidentally left under charged. Not sure what happened to the other 2 sessions on the watch. Really hard to pick the right setup for today, but settled for the 7m as this sail still needs breaking in.  Good to see a few Pinnas out and about.

JJ, good to see you back on the Mistral, and still showing the others how to go fast.

Tailwind - pretty close to JJ's numbers there, good sailing!

Me - on call and very tired after a very busy week, so I decided to have a quiet day today.

That's an impressive ocean hour, alpha and nm Jake. Nice distance too. Carnage on the water today! I am glad you had a lot of fun before injuring yourself.

At the rate we are damaging gear and sailors I may not have a team by the end of the year...

Bummer Boz. Hope it's a quick recovery. Snake - should have come to smelville. Guaranteed to reduce that w29 by a few millimeters running the sandbar. Like tailwind, I also had an encounter with the sandbar which only damaged my ego, as others were in close proximity. As they. say "No pain no gain"

Sorry to hear about the injuries, Jake maybe you should leave the fin cover on that one.

Its taken me 4 goes to get a decent ocean sail happen (equipment failure, lack of wind, lack of time etc...) so finally managed the first good one for the season. Got that monkey of my back now ;-)

Great team turnout on the saturday back in Perth.

First of all thanks all for the comments. We will have to see the official results to see if my finish was legit. After the race Dan Engdal mentioned that some of the inside bouys were moving position due to current?? Made it diffcult to aim for some of the marks as some were very deep or slightly upwind. The southerly wind direction probably added to the chaos and confusion.

"Say no to 5-0" was never more true than on Saturday. A lot of the pro slalom guys were on 4 metre sails. The organizer had doubts about proceeding with the race after the wind booted in so called a vote with the competetors. 50 or more people registered but only about 27 voted to go through with the race (even I didnt put up my handUndecided).  Many didnt have the gear for the conditions.

From the startline most of the fleet screamed downwind with a few ending up in the water half way to the first boat. I was overpowered on my 3.5 fully donwhauled even sheeted out most of the time. Few more in the drink on the first gybe, including me. Quickly got back on and head to the first inside bouy which seemed very deep. Already started to see a few quitting and walking back to the startline including some pros which wasnt a good sign.

A bit too chicken to bear away enough to reach the outside boats which made the outside gybes very hard. Spent a lot of time trying to water start in the swell and incessant wind which was flipping the sail and board out of position. At this point I was getting disheartened watching the rest of the fleet screaming down the course and thinking about quitting or getting on a rescue boat. After a few more dropped gybes and waterstarting it was gettting closer to the 1 hour time limit so i knew I had to get going even though my legs were in agony and starting to cramp up. The last few legs were a lot less deep on both tacks and I was starting to get the gybes. Went passed a girl at the 3rd last boat who was ahead of me most of the race. I gybed around the last cray boat and I could see the finish line to my relief! The water was lot flatter and almost cross wind so i was able to cruise to the finish line but made sure I didnt get ahead of myself and crash right at the end infront of the crowdLaughing. Got to finish a few minutes over 1 hour to be greeted by Mike from the wannabees who was champ for grabbing my rig and giving me a lift back to the startline not to mention that he finished in 40 minutes on a 4.7!  I expected to see most of the 36 or so participants at the finish line but only saw a handful of people mostly the wave sailors from Geraldton, Ben Severne, Jesper and the girl who came in after me. Soon realised that many had quit somewhere down the course. So glad I didnt listen to my head telling me to quit most of the way.

3.5 Blade, 80 evil twin

Lessoned learned from screamin Leeman:

-Speed is your enemy especially in 30+ knots and chop!

-Always have a few small wave sails before a race incase of nuclear conditions

-Hang onto your 90s plastic fantastic boards for conditions like this (Jesper used one to win the race)

Will post about the funner slalom races on Sunday the 26th sessions

Thanks for the details, Ken, and well done for finishing. Good thing you had a hankerchief sail with you. Even I don't have sails that small. Did you not wear your GPS?

Welcome back, Bunyip!

Great recap, Ken and huge congrats on the finish!! Sounds pretty epic to me. Good practise for the LOC that never seems to happen (the one with wind!) 3.5m sail hahaha. That's tiny! !!
