Sandy Point, Vic

It was an interesting day. The wind had moderated overnight and was now reading 20-30 most of the time. We were intending to start earlier, around 10am, as per forcast swing to WSW. But at 10am it was still WNW. Finally we saw it go west around 10.30 so we went to have a look and found a 30+ knt WSW squall . Whoohoo! We're ON!

But while rigging the 5.2m, I looked up and saw it had dropped to under 20. OK, I will rig the 5.7m as well!

Went for one run on 5.7m and JP70SL to check it out and was pretty powered up so I went back and got the speed board. Just as I did a black squall came over and I launched straight into a run. This was my best 2 sec for the day.

The wind was up and down in the squalls, but I was able stick to the speed board with the 5.7m.

Right at the end, when I was completely exhausted I was about to quit but decided to do a few runs on the small slalom again. Just as I launched another stronger squall came through (25kts?) and I was nearly fully lit. After that I really was stuffed so I gave up.

Wind direction was mostly WSW, and the angle was pretty good most of the session. Strength aound 20-25 with occaisional short busts closer to 30Kts. Not strong enough for me to use my 5.2m.

I tested the 2019 KA Koncept 5.7m speed on an SDM mast for the first time and it really seemed to change it's character. It was more like the 5.2m, with a deeper belly and nice twist. It did feel a bit less reactive than an RDM for my weight, but it also seemed more grunty deep off the wind. There are not many times I have gone this fast on the 5.7m/5.8m sail, especially in such low winds. Cool

CA40 speed, JP70SL, 5.7m KA Koncept speed, 21cm and 18cm Tribal speed fins.

Nice numbers Andrew. Good to read about rdm masts. All my son and I use. Maybe sdm better above 5.2?

It will all depends on the sail and the way it is cut. I try to use all RDM's, but sometimes you can get a different shape in the sail with an SDM. You also need to be able to access RDM or SDM interchangable cams. For instance, some race sails dont have a RDM cam option.

I usually far prefer RDM masts as they have a more reactive flex for a lighter sailor, and the big one: They just dont break! Disclaimer - your results may vary Wink

I use SDM normally, only in my 7m and up sizes, which this year mean just the 7m as I dont have anything larger. Smile
