45 minute swim in 10 degree water - not so much fun. Up until the sail settled nicely on top of the longboard and the 25 mph wind and 4 ft chop carried everything away, I was actually having fun. Getting out of breath trying to swim after the gear reminded me too much of the SUPer that they picked out of the water dead just a couple of years ago. That really did not feel good.

From the water, it looked like I was making no progress towards land, trying to swim in a 5 mm suit + hooded vest + boots + open-palm mittens. The GPS tracks show things differently, I would have been able to stand within the next 30 minutes or so. But I sure was glad when Nina showed up to give me a tow. At the same time, the parking lot filled up with police, ambulance, harbor master, firefighters, and press. The rescue boat reached us just as Nina had dragged me into shallow water. Big thanks to all the rescuers. It was not really a close call at all, but much too close for my comfort level. I miss Fangyland, Albany, and Lake George!

Not a Top Ten Day! That sounds like really nasty experience Peter, glad to hear to you made it and are now that little bit older and wiser.

Good job Nina!

Ha, made the news! Of course they messed it up and said Nina also "ran into distress". Check the pictures at https://www.capecod.com/cape-wide-news/breaking-search-underway-for-missing-kite-surfer-at-kalmus-beach-in-hyannis/ - good thing we're not in Germany, or I would have gotten in trouble for swimming outside the designated areaEmbarassed

I think it's time to order a couple of Motions. The emergency function would have come in handy. After the scare today, I might even be able to convince Nina to wear it even when she's freestyling. She did not like it when my gear made it to shore, and I was nowhere to be seen.

Really glad you survived this little adventure, I can imagine how you felt.

This is also my worry now, a very scary feeling. I like to make sure I can fly the sail before I head into deep water.

The fire department posted an article with lots of pictures at http://capecodfd.com/PAGES%20Special%202/Hyannis-Kalmus-Boat-Rescue-042919.htm

The interesting one is the one where Nina is looking for me. I'm pretty I'm in the frame, but impossible to find:

Funny as you are, fangy, I may need a couple more days to laugh about it. This thing still bugs me more than it should, considering there was never any real danger, and nothing really happened. Full report at https://boardsurfr.blogspot.com/2019/04/rescued.html

You're right, Maree! One of the three fire fighters in the first rescue boat was a "girl power representative", too.
