Avalon, WA, AU 5.3 Voodoo, JP 83 Waveboard

First time out at Gearies and really enjoyed it. Arms were gone after just 3 runs and I didnt have the balls to try a real launch off the ramps but will use the wave gear a bit more and gve it a crack next time.

Yunbas with CrimsonSplash for an arvo of fun and games. Very surprised to have it to ourselves. Dan was absolutely smashing it out and I was just following him around making him look good. Post more later.

Yunbas had a big tide and no really flat stuff, but plenty of water and wind to play in. Dan was fearless and chased the big downhill bullet after bullet and I think, racked up a PB on his first Yunbas run. I tried all my thin foil variations of fangy fins. The 24 showed the most promise, but disconcerting let go easily when running downhill in chop with the fin at a low angle of attack.  On my last run of the day, I used the production FF22. It behaved faultlessly and continues to be the standard.

I was overpowered on the Koncept 6.6 and once again should have rigged smaller as I could not use the power in the sail 99% of the time. I am hoping that one day the message will sink in and I will rig smaller in these denser winter winds.

I used the Windtech SB64, and throughout the afternoon progressively dialled the tail back to full floppy. The board was great. The sail was too big and the modified skinny foil fangyfins too unforgiving in the chop. Note to self, dig out my longer weedies and enjoy the deep water downhills at speed on the SB64.

The water was cold, the wind was strong, the runs long and Dan was inspirational with the big cojones, equals Top Ten Fangy day.

John. just watch "Buckets" when sailing Gearie's. it's snapped a few masts in its time. The trick is to look over your shoulder before going for that last lip smack. if there's a bigger wave behind, make sure you'll be able to get out through it. Because once in the shore break, there's nowhere to go except over that hole filled reef.

Souns like staying inthe warm and reading a book wasn't a bad decision after all.

Thanks Mike, I took as much care as I could today and still came close to getting swallowed by a monster wave. I will probably spend a bit more time on the wave gear so I can be ready for the next big swell.
