 Friday 14th June – windsurf ***** The Manor - Felixstowe – sunny.

F2 Zantos 310 with Tushingham Lightning 8.5 with 44 cm fin.

Fin – 24.02 knot max., 22.41 knot ave., 14.97 knot hour, 21.88 knot mile, 61.80 km., 13.49 knot alpha.

After yesterdays bad session I bounced back today in conditions that suited my sailing style much better and things don’t get much better, wall to wall warm sunshine and a nice cruising breeze:) With high water around nine our plan was to wait until the tide had dropped and go to The Manor although some sailors had good early sessions on the Orwell and the Stour! So, a relaxing morning in the garden doing my exercises and reading in lovely warm sunshine, then I wrapped my GW-60 (gps watch) to send back for a refund, the second in a year, warning – don’t buy one as they are not fit for purpose! After few messages on WhatsApp saying Chris Stephens and Neil Hurrell were heading down so after a yummy chicken sandwich Mag and I drove the short distance to The Manor. Neil on 8m and Chris on 6.6m were already out so as Mag walked home, I rigged my big freeride kit. With the wind dead side shore the 8.5 was fine for the whole session, a fraction light at times and picking up quite fresh at times but the Lightning handles it with ease:) I made a pigs ear of rigging the sail, not enough downhaul and one of my cams popped off second gybe and I spent the first session sailing like this as I was going for a none stop hour which involves 8 runs out to the Wadegate post. Well I actually beat to nearly Landguard point and had a really nice broad reach back before heading back to the beach. It was wind with tide but it was no problem staying upwind and it was a little lumpy especially out to sea there the current must be the strongest! Andy Mexome had arrived and I thought he was a little optimistic rigging 6.6 for a 100lt. board but even Neil was changing down to 6.9 but I didn’t think it was that windy? Andy went out and rigged his new 7.8 and Neil went back to 8m with lightweights Ian and Paul going well on 6.2 and 6.5 so I decided to have another go. The wind had swung SSW more onshore and after one run out, I decided to go for a down winder. I sailed really broad parallel with the beach which really smooths out the sea and is about as much fun as you can have on a windsurfer:) You did have to keep an eye open for loads of lobster pots and when I got level with The Dip and saw there were no windsurfers out but loads of kitesurfers in the river and with my back leg really aching I beat out past the red and white bouy to start the upwind leg! It must have been the windiest time, a good 18 knots and the sea pretty big it was a good beat back. I cleared the pier in one beat and only had to go out to sea once more to get back. So definitely a 5 star session covering 38 miles even if top speeds were low, it was great fun none the less. The weekend is looking promising too with an afternoon session at Felixstowe tomorrow followed by hopefully Point Clear on Sunday:)
