Fangyland with Cap'n Calm. A short session due to an unplanned and rapid mast-ectomy. Post more later.

I had planned to do a bit of study and wait until the day warmed a little. That didn’t happen, mainly due to my unimpressive dedication to the books when the trees outside are stirring.

The breeze was all over the shop, but decent enough when the rain came through. Did I mention it was cold enough to pass as ‘nippy’ in Albantartica? In any case, I went for the Barge, SimmerSCR 8.4 combo.

I was just settling in and ready to try and chase Cap’n Calm around when yet another Ka Mast transformed into a three-piece. I spent the next while de-rigging, stowing it on the board and watching Cap’n Calm merrily sailing back and forth. I began the long, cold, trudge back to base and the Cap’n pretended not to care by not stopping anywhere near me.

When I finally got to shore and was deciding whether to re-rig, Huey left the premises, and just to rub a bit more salt into the wound, the Cap’n timed it perfectly to arrive back on the last gasp.

A broken mast, and got smashed by Cap’n Calm yet again…yep I don’t think today qualified as a Top Ten Fangy Day. Laughing

Joined Fangy at Nairns, for a cold light wind session, more to keep my sailing fitness up that anything else.

Rigged the big stuff, 65cm board 6.6 koncept and 21@55 deltoid.

Eveb with the 55deg fin it was unsafe in the inside flat area, just too many mega weedburgs. So had to stay out in the not so flat, wasn't so bad at the western end around the gybe markers. I could follow the chop lines going east and head back up going west.

But silly old fart, forgot my camel pack and spray jacket, so I was getting cold and thirsty, so headed back for a drink and discovered Fangy had broken yet another mast. Then the wind dropped off, really puting an end to the session.

This just goes to prove, if you don't break a mast, you can do more coloured lines

Fangy where did the mast snap, last one I snapped was a RDM just above the boom. Or was it just an old mast? .

Boz, my Kilwell one-piece Matrix 5's are 26 years old and still going strong. My Ka, Pryde, and North two-piece masts never get a chance to get old. They last only slightly longer than the English batting line up. I always snap them just above the boom head. The Ka's have been the most disappointing as they were all brand new. Pacey told me he is convinced that all kit these days is made optimum weight vs strength for 70-80kg blokes. The way I trash masts I think I agree with him. So if you see any one-piece Kilwell Matrix 5's in need of a good home, let me know! Laughing

Fangy, got a bottom kilwell piece, don't know if it's a matrix 5, top split on the ferral joint welcome to have the bottom pieceLaughing I know Snake also had a KA snap and he's a lightweight, mast was brand new used once I think. A couple season ago Ledge to Lancelin one bloke had two Severne snap on the beach mind you it was a hot day, had full downhaul on and they snapped like a twig. Pot luck you get some good and some bad I think. Seems to happen on the larger sails 460 mast and above.

Yes please Boz!  I don't think 14 degrees, minus wind chill and rain, put too much heat stress on the mast yesterday Tongue out

And you are on the money with the sizing. They have all been 460 plus sizes.  When I get rich and famous I reckon I might try a Slake mast and see if they are worth the $.
