Sandy Point, Vic.

I nice easterly. Pretty much the fist one all season, which is unheard of! around 20 knots with some gusts to 25 and some quite big lulls to below 15kts.

On a mission to test my IS87 and Fanatic 79L side by side.

Sailed the IS87 first. All good with Tribal weedspeed 27cm.

Came in and chaged to Fanatic which was fitted with one of my favourite fins, the TM26. The same fin I have done most of my PB Aphas on (in the IS87).

First run spinning out all over the place. Thought I must have caught weed on the fin so stopped and cleared a couple of times. Nothing helped so I came in and swapped to the same Weedspeed 27 from the other board. Much better now but still seemed more sensitive to spinout which just does not happen on this fin in the IS87. Interesting... The back straps on the Fanatic are aboit 1.5cm further back, which may make a difference, but I dont think it is all down to that.

Other differences: The fanatic rides flatter at slighly underpowered speeds (mid to high 20's) and feels stickier at those speeds. from high 20's up it feels as fast and the GPS confirms.

Over chop the fanatic seems to be a bit less bouncy on some smaller wave frequencies, but not much different in others and bigger waves.

Big difference in the way it gybes. It is much harder for me to engage the rail into a tight carving gybe, or vary the radius in the gybe. That may partly be because I have literally done a million gybes on the IS87, but not all of it. It has a slightly wider last foot on the tail than the IS87 and therfore a different, straighter taper at the tail. It has a flatter rocker through the middle as well which does not help the carve when the rail is engaged. That said, I did just as fast an Alpha on the Fanatic, but I did a wider carve.

I will try the comparison again in different conditions. They are pretty much identical in size and general shape, so I cant see a need for both. So far I have not found anything the Fanatic does better, but I will keep trying.

IS87 and Fanatic 79. Tribal WeedSpeed 27. 2020 KA Speed 5.7m. GW-52 GPS.

Those two boards have a big difference in concave. IS is well off the centre line.

Fanatic fin CL at 153mm, back strap middle holes at 142/293mm

IS87 fin CL at 163mm, back strap middle holes at 208/363mm

That's enough to make fins behave very differently.

yes mike. Thanks for the measurements. And they certainly do! I have a few fins to try to see what the Fanatic likes for me. Undecided

BTW. There are not late model boards. Both quite a few years old.

Andrew, stick a straight edge over the bottom of the Fanatic to see if the rocker has gone a bit hollow in front of the fin box.

Those Fanatics are from the era where they had the 'T Stringer' and they don't tend to go hollow.

They do collapse the deck at the end of the wood reinforcement, which is between the feet, exactly where you don't want a stress raiser.

I've repaired a couple.

The T stringer was a great idea, very little extra weight, it holds the rocker while the board is built and they don't go concave.

Why does everybody not do it? Tee under the feet on a Wave or Jump board and the deck doesn't collapse either.

Daffy, the dims I gave you were for a 2011 Falcon 89 and a 2014 IS87.

That is a mighty old 87 you have, but that's the same Falcon.

Thanks for sharing the informative comparison Andrew (and Mike).

I have a 2014 IS87 and have foot straps back, mast foot back, boom close to chin high and Koncepts (6.6 or 5.4) rigged with sufficient downhaul. With these settings I never have issues with the board flying out of control, I'm searching for a trim that causes the board to fly too much so I can then back settings off to get the perfect setting (perhaps this is the wrong thinking, but that is the aim at the moment).

The older falcon 79/80 was one of the boards on my radar to buy/try as foot straps seemed further back and that has now been confirmed. I will watch Andrew's posts with interest to see how he finds the falcon.  In saying this, while I can't seem to get my IS87 over 34knots (2sec) Andrew has shown in his previous posts the IS87 (older model) is capable of MUCH more! so I will continue to try new settings and build on the small knowledge base I already have.
