Windfoil, Foilville WA, AU

Beautiful day for foiling. Went up to Melville for a fang and saw Tim.

The small wing was just enough in 15-17kn and very comfy in 17-20kn

Warm water and sunshine, Great funLaughing

Wind was patchy, water was shallow, speeds were slow. But still, it was way better than working.

The session started with quite light and consistent winds, so rigged big again. Even tried the biggest fin I carry. 3 foilers in the bay. After an hour or so the breeze filled in but became quite gusty with large lulls appearing everywhere. Tried changing down boards but probably should have changed down sail size and kept on the bigger board.Highlight was trying to chase the Lunny-foiler mid river but he was too fast in the early marginal conditions. Next time Lunny. Quite a few Pinnas down here to day but not all sailing!

Last sail of the year. Does a wave sail even count? :)

Happy New Year to everyone :)

Coronation Beach, WA, AU

New Years Eve sesh at Coros.

Got there around 1pm and it was pretty light, maybe 15-18K.  Too light for wave sailing so I pulled out the Windtech 64 + 7.6 TR9 + 33 Tribal WS.

Too light for this set-up also initially, but eventually it filled in to around 18-22K and I was flying.

Great fun charging out through the waves and trying to pick a line that didn't require too much jumping.  Coming back in was a hoot, flying down the big set waves and then hooning into the lagoon.

Late arvo I was about a kay offshore and there were a few big rogues breaking even out there.  A mast-high beast reared up in front of me and started to pitch.  I shoulda' chicken gybed, but I thought "nah I got this" and tried to climb over the face of it, but it was too vertical and too powerful and I went over the falls backwards!  The force of the wave folded my rig in half, snapping the top section of my mast, and there was a gaping tear in the luff pocket of the 7.6.

Too gnarly out there to derig, so I drifted along for a while until the waves settled down a bit and then rolled up my sail, tied the boom to my rear foot strap, and started to paddle in.  A friendly kiter towed me the last few hundred metres across the lagoon and I surveyed the damage on shore.  Just the mast section and luff pocket tear, the board and boom were fine.

I was having a ball up to that point, so more disappointed that the session was cut short.

Happy New Year all!!

An exciting session, Greg, sounds like you got a bit over confident. Pity it was cut short, but fortunately not too much damage.
