Morning: Christchurch Estuary, Falcon 90L, Severne 7m, fin 34 vector.  So almost topped 25Kt, oh well next time.

Then harbour, JP xcite, 6m Severne, Tlab 42, Lumpy and gusty.  Wild ride, tweaked my foot when I tumbled on a wave.  Hard work, so called it a day beofre I did myself an injury.

Lyttelton Harbour, NZ ..Sailing out of Charteris Bay. Conditions brutal, way overpowered in the gusts along with odd direction waves, and made even worse by failng to rig my gear in line with previously tested settings that usually work - Simply couldn't direct the bags of power in my sail at all. Consequently on last leg had to sail the entire way back from Quail Island out of my harness lines and footstraps. ..That's two bad rigging days in a row. ..In retrospect wish I'd sailed out of Lyttelton. ..Exocet RS1, Overdrive 6.2, Select 27

Hi Dan, re your fast GPS unit reading.

The software uses 3 consecutive one second readings to get the average for 2 secs, so the 1 sec (display reading) is often way faster.

The GPSSS guys came up with this 2 sec average to make sure it was a more realistic speed.

High flash readings were particularly bad in the days of positional data tracking (Garmin 201 etc)  before Doppler speed data became the commonly used method.

The next generation of GPS units (ie 'Motion') will be better again as they sample at up to 10 times per second and also pick up 3 different satellite systems so there is less chance of error.
