Saturday 30th May - Windsurf **** - The Dip at Felixstowe – sunny and warm!

After two 5 Star sessions on the lovely Stour and with high water getting later and later several of us decided to try The Dip here in sunny Felixstowe, the first time I have sailed here for many months! We arrived around 11 just half an hour before low water and it did look good, wall to wall sunshine yet again and with a breeze although marginal it looked set to build. With a full set of Hurrells, Neil, Lee and Craig plus Andy Mexome , Swainy and me all with trailers we soon took over The Dip but we can luckily keep them off the prom but our small car soon fills up! Most sailors were rigging 8m + but Andy and I set up our foils, the bug has defiantly bittern! Andy went with 7.3 which is much too small for me with my heavy old Starboard so rigged 7.8 as I didn’t fancy uphauling my 8.5 with the sea going to get lumpy when the tide turned. Andy was the first to take the water and can get his new Starboard foil flying so easily and I thought we had arranged to run down to Landguard but although I fly straight off the beach the wind went light and patchy to a few runs. With the tide about to turn so we had wind with tide and I didn’t fancy doing that until the wind picked up! After a couple of short runs, I set off broad with a little more wind and set off down the coast thinking that Andy would follow, instead he headed the opposite way to East Lane Martello Tower! I got to where we launch at The Manor in four runs but I was underpowered most of the time and being a sea foil novice I found it hard to fly consistently in the very lumpy sea! You had to give the many lobster pots a wide berth as I beat back against the tide and big sea but I made it back eventually. Then then had the best runs of the whole session in smoother sea in front of The Dip chasing Andy around, he followed me in on a couple runs and the foil is so quiet you just know he was there, well until I pushed it too hard and nearly feel in!!! It is good fun playing with the swell on the way back to the beach and I also spotted one of my sons kiting mates, Ben who was doing some top gybes:) Although it was pretty slow today it was great fun and I think it was better to foil than fin as I reckon you had to beat both ways just to stay in the same spot and I hate that! I was dead on my feet at the end and was surprised to discover this was the farthest I have ever foiled in a single session, 34 miles in total, making it 100 miles windsurfing in three days! A bit of a catch up on the beach before heading home with a similar day forecast tomorrow!
