1356 days ago 1 categories Well that was fun... I jus bought a starboard foil race set, 115+ Fuesealge, 900 and 800 cm2 wings and 95cm carbon mast.
BUT... the FMX has a 'standard' tuttle box and the starboard use a 'square' deep tuttle design... but thankfully the boat shed leant me a hacksaw and the head has 2 grooves so you can easily cut it down. Scary stuff.
Anyway, I got it fitted to the board and took it for a spin with the 8.0 SkyBlade while the others out had 9.0 HG2's and HGO's. If I'd trusted the apparent wind instead of the forecast I'd have tried the 10.0, but for first times probably best to be comfortable.
First Impressions: the starboard is HEAVY underfoot compared to AFS, and has a higher minimum speed to fly. I guess dropping the 600mm wide back wind for the half-sized SB can help explain the difference. Now the good news. the extra long fueslage works so well at controlling the extra force when you sheet into a gust. the backfoot on my AFS was so delicate when powered up and trying to squeeze all the juice out of the sail, while the SB gives you more comfort that your not about to skyrocket. 21kts on first outing should help convine you of that!
I also made a few flying gybes, and a few very messy ones. Got the foil to shallow and spun-out (need to get used to the -10cm mast length!) on an upwind run and mid-gybe. felt weird!
I've been thinking about this purchase since the Nationals in Jan, so glad to finally have done it! Now I just hope we get let back into QLD so I can claim my top10 in AUS at the next Nationals....
Next I had a short sail with Alexey and his new gear too. Felt weird sailing recreational gear.
