Point Walter, WA, AU   Tried sailing here for a while but so so crowded and almost as lumpy as Mandurah Sealed.  Saw a lone sail up on the sand bar at Lucky Bay swhich looked far more pleasant so decided to head that way.  This plan was cut short by an encounter with a submerged tree of all things so lost enthusiam and drove there.  So much nicer.  Flat water and no one else. Was only just making it over the sandbar with the TWS so decided to head home and spend the rest of the day polishing the Fangy fin to get some more upwind ability out of it as would have been ideal here today.   120 Tabou Rocket, 6.7 RRD Move, 33 TWS

Salter Point, WA, AU iS111, 6.2K, 24FF Reconnaisance mission.

I hate sailing Easterlies on the Swan, Too much chop /wind swell and too many boats, so I thought I would try a different location today - a little beach along Salter Point Drive, where the Easterly is directly onshore, and the water was knee deep to "can just touch the bottom deep" on the moderately high tide today. Wind was a gusty 14 - 20 kn, but I don't think it would have been any more gusty than anywhere else. Tide 0.9m at Fremantle. I rigged conservatively because I didn't know if there might be shallow spots and I didn't want to hit the bottom at speed. Similarly, no speed runs, but I would be more confident next time. There were small rolling wind waves, not really any chop, and less swell than some places at Coodanup the other day. You can't sail all the way to the other side, because of an old jetty with very frequently placed rotting pylons that would be dangerous to sail between - some are under the water. The runs are probably a similar length to sailing out to the sandbar at Melville, and a canoe was the only boat traffic I saw while I was out.

I didn't sail far today becasue my "out of practice" muscles are still really tired after Thursday's session.

I will definitety sail here again on an Easterly. Much closer than Mandurah, and should be flatter on a lower tide.

Point Walter East, WA

Very choppy session on the CM with 7.0 Loft RB. Saw Ant briefly but he must have been just about finished his session. Been a while since I've been out and was good to get wet - even though the conditions were a bit hectic on the river with the strong easterly.

Melville is usually in a wind shadow in easterlies. Must have been a bit of north in it by the time you got there

Ant, I sailed over to the attadale foreshore yesterday and found some rocks that I have not noticed before. Check my track from yesterday -

Were they big rocks scott? It was deep enough near to shore with a 25, will use a 20 tmw to be safe if its on and get closer.

Yep a couple of big ones. It was the weed that caught my eye and I swerved. If you zoom into my track you can see the squiggles where I got off and walked around for a bit.

Yes Anita, there was plenty of north in the wind when I was at Melville but even a full easterly is ok once you get out to the sandbar..a bit of a pain getting back to the car park but at least you can always walk.  Having the shallow draft FF will really help stay on the flat water too.   Liking your new spot, will give it a crack.

thanks Scott.   I always knew trees were good for you.  If I hadn't hit the submerged tree (luckily going very slowly upwind) I would have been destined to be the next Titanic as those rocks were exactly where I was headed.  Not that many will go here but here is where the tree was, water depth was waist deep.  Probably can see it on low tide.

Anita, Just so you and others know, your 'Jetty' is actually a fence (one of a few around here) built around 1866 to hold back the mud and keep the river navigable to timber barges.   Made origially of Jarrah uprights and Cassurina horizontals.  Whilst the wood is at least 100 years old there is also a barge wreck right next to the fence at some unknown point so sailing at speed near or between the posts could be fairly dodgy. I only know this due to a geocache on one of the uprights.   You can read more at http://museum.wa.gov.au/sites/default/files/THE%20CONVICT-BUILT%20%27FENCE%27%20IN%20THE%20CANNING%20RIVER.pdf.  Or seach for geocaches in this area.

Flex, I knew it wasn't a jetty, it was just the easiest way to describe it. I knew it was something to do with getting timber down river from Canning Mills. I wasn't going to attempt to sail through.
