1033 days ago Kalmus, Cape Cod. Foil session in marginal conditions, as the wind dropped as soon as we got out. The meter showed 10-13 mph averages, which translates to 7-9 knots measured on shore. With a 6.5, I needed gusts and lots of pumping to get going on the new GT-R foil. I had the phone announcing speeds, and it showed that the foil needs a board speed of 12-13 knots for stable foiling, with a -1 shim. Pumping the Stingray 140 from the board speed of around 6 knots up to 13 knots took quite a bit of effort, but I made some progress. Interesting how different the technique is compared to the Slingshot i84. With the i84, it just a little pump, a step on the tail to kick the board out of the water, and another pump or two while the board levels out. Trying that on the 800 SB front wing gets the board out, only to plop right back down onto the water - a waste of energy. Instead, a bunch of increasingly faster little pumps with the board still on the water until it reaches enough speed is needed.
Took the SS i99 out at the end of the session for a comparison. Much easier to get going, but a bit slower, and much more sensitive to the ups and downs from chop and swell.
3rd session on the GT-R, and got a foil 5x10 PB despite not even going for speed, and slogging most of the time. Can't wait for a nicely powered session in flatter water to get more speed - although in our typical SW wind and big chop, I may stick to the i84 for some fun playing with waves.
