Wow that was good! I've found the Lake Macquarie whooses spot for big westerlies.. It was so nice to not have to worry about getting caught out in the middle in big chop / wind or the wind dying down. It was thigh to waist deep so I could avoid gybing in the strongest stuff/ biggest chop if I wanted to and stop and rest in the lulls.
I rigged for the forecast rather than what was there. The first hr I had the 5.7m + 90. I should have had a 7m on..I had a nice slog / look around sussing out depth etc and got a few planing bits for 23kts..
I left the small gear on the end of the point for if/ when it came in and went back to have lunch and rig the big kit. It was now a patchy 5 - 14kts so I only got going a few times..As I get older I'm struggling to move quick enough when I gybe.. but at least I wasn't scared to have a go ..
Came back in left the big gear and decided to go out and get the smaller kit and try to slog in. It seemed to be picking up so I went up with my gear on and sure enough there were some 20-25kts puffs coming through.. Finally powered up!
I went for a couple of bearaways amongst the kites. That's a lake PB plus LM board PB but it doesn't count as it was in 6inch - 1 ft triangular chop and not out in the middle.. I'll keep a new tab for Squids..
I probably stopped too early. I thought it was over but it looked really good as I drove home.
It's better in a NW as it blows between the caravan park and yacht club. When it swung more WNW there was a dead spot in there. I thought it might be better towards Marks Point but it was dead there too..
In the old days I used to walk the board up to the point to launch but after talking to the kiters I launched straight from the car and it was patchy but good. I touched bottom in close with the 32cm but I was plodding so it didn't matter.
Between 6 - 12kites but they weren't really a problem as they were down in the bay near the shore more. They may have been going more consistently than me at first but I'm glad I windsurf rather than kite.
One kiter got slammed into the rocks that run around the point when he was launching and had to be taken away by ambulance.
I'm stoked I've got somewhere that I can actually look forward to sailing when it blows a W.. It's going to make me soft though..
I might even take the speed gear tomorrow and see how bad the chop gets..
I saw Byron blasting around at Teralba as I went past.
