Bostonfoil (17127km): Valentine, NSW, AU 175-135/F4 900 Slalomfuse/7.0-8.0 S 15-25+kts - Not a great day. Broke a mast on the third run. Just got a good gust on the top of a wave while pushing it. A bit unfamiliar with the combo but I no doubt deserved it. Probably the straw that broke the camel's back for my 460. And there has been some straw! Swapped gear and went to the larger sail but the breeze kicked up to 25kts and my day was over....Not for Sue though. She was last seen charging fearlessly in to the freshening southerly buster.
Byron Mcilveen (63506km): Brightwaters Jetty, NSW, AU s2 venom 5.7, falcon 90, select v max 31 went out late 6 to just after 7 yep was getting dark. havnt used the 5 .7 since lake george untill two weeks ago and now used it 3 times in last two weeks and do I love it. was so chopy where i launched had to go upwind as just unsailable washing machine huge rolling swells. prety crazy speed in open lake.
sboardcrazy (24291km): 8-15kts then 15- 25kts plus S Valentine, NSW, AU 7m Turbo- Windtech57 ( 90ltres) - 28cm WT weedy I had an appointment in Newcastle in the am so the plan was to go to Valentine afterwards and wait for the S. After 3 hrs of waiting I was ready to go home.. It was blowing but offshore. It finally started to come in from the S at 3pm. I rigged for the 12-18kts that Norah was getting. I should have been on the big kit.. Jeff was paddling in with a broken mast as I launched. I got one puff to get c 17kts speed as I left the shore then I was struggling to get on the plane. Ingrained bad habits are frustrating! I wish I'd learned correctly from the start rather than teaching myself. I got one decent gybe where I managed to come over the board and keep my frontarm straight. Non planing but I got it going after the flip to get the alpha which isn't bad for me in the lake. I'm falling in more as I'm trying to change the way I'm gybing. 1st use of the Go Pro Hero 9. It kept flopping when I gybed so I came in and tightened it . The next bit was a bit more powered and it was a little scary going into the gybes. That setup is my 12 -18kts combo. I was surprised to see Jeff slogging around as he usually runs rings around me. He said he'd chosen the wrong sail ( bigger option) and was too overpowered. I decided I needed to do a bearaway to try and improve my 2sec ( current 25.85kts) so back out and went for it over the back of the chop..The wind was coming in and the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up...It was getting really strong so I came back upwind. It was too dangerous to try and gybe and the board was luffing so I decided to just drop in and turn the board and then hightail it back into shore. I had a lot of trouble waterstarting..I couldn't understand why the board kept getting flipped upside down by the wind or waves. The mast would go down to the bottom of the lake and then when I got it up everything wasn't lined up to start. the windswells were breaking over my head and pushing everything around. When I finally did get up hooking in as I did it was too strong and I'd round up. ( When I came in Jeff said he was surprised I went back out ( been off the water too long ?? ) and that it was gusting to 35kts at Norah. ) I finally got going. By now there was messy 1.5m windswells and the gear was too fast for the conditions. Rather than get launched on the ramps I decided to unhook and luff but once unhooked the kit got ripped out of my hands. Luckily my rear foot was still in the strap . If it had flown off I would have never caught it again! The board had flipped upside down so my foot was twisted at a weird angle but it survived. It seemed to take half an hour to restart ( probably only 10mins). Same problems. At one stage I started to swim the gear towards the shore but I realised if I didn't get going soon I'd end up below the point , next stop Speers Point! This is where the 2 sec thought about the marine rescue flashed through my mind.. To put all of this in context my heart was going so hard I felt like I was going to have a heart attack and I was really exhausted . I knew I had to keep going. Definitely too old for the surf these days! I figured there would have to be a lull sometime. I scored one and managed to get up and going and flew into the shore. I did my usual thing and was going so fast I had to self eject to stop while the kit kept going.. I had to run after it and just got it before it got swept beyond the point..I struggled to carry it ashore in the strong wind . zzz.. grr I felt like the heart must have been up to 150 but Garmin says only 122? Bugger off Garmin I know I had a big session.. Jeff came down in the rian to help me carry the gear back to the car but I'd come in there deliberately so he was saved the effort. He said he was losing sight of me amongst the windswells. By now it was good B & j conditions with a waveboard and pocket hankerchief.. That's the first time I've sailed Valentine in a big S in a very long time. I think Lake Macquarie wanted me to take her more seriously..I think I'll be a little bit more conservative and forget about the 2 sec next time! I had the Go pro on but I have no idea whether it got anything. It was pointing at me while I was floundering around so it could have some ok stuff. I had the max lens on though so the chop will look 15cms high..
I posted Norah as Valentine would have got the wind before Newcastle. So not quite as strong as this but still bleedin strong! |
