Motukarara, Canterbury, Mikez 74L, 25 cm fin, 5.6 sail.  Felt overpowered so treked back and swapped to 5m sail and managed to go faster.  Was frustrated I couldn't quite get faster but had a blast and didn't want to come off the water but Dan was waiting impatiently and it was after 7pm so time to call it a day.  Addictive sport. Beat my nautical mile so I'm happy.

Lyttelton Harbour, NZ ..Arrived at Naval Point with my 80litre Exocet and 5.8, and see Dan M sailing with a 5.4 wave sail. As well the East-Northeast was driving troublesome looking waves onto the ramp and so I had to figure better to wait for the evening tide in the estuary.

But as I drove away, I thought why not go take a look at Charteris Bay - At least test my theory that a fresh ENE can fill in Charteris Bay even though the topography would strongly suggest otherwise. And I wasn't wrong, when I got there the bay looked well filled in up to within 20-30 metres of the boat ramp. There was no shadow like there often seems to be in a Northeast. ..It was nice and sunny and as always the place looked idylic. So I rigged. When I walked out that twenty odd metres it was soon apparent there was no shortage of breeze and it was probably going to be more than a match for me, but I thought just a quick go.

After several attempts to get aboard I was off, and almost immediately was brutally powered up, far more than I was comfortable with, far more than I could reasonably expect to gybe back in, or even safely cross the chop in, survival demanded barreling along the chop lines which by coincidence aimed me straight at King Billy Island - At which Peter Pan starts calling in my head "go for the mile!" "go for the mile!", and the common sense department starts calling ".... that!" ..Anyway there was less wind on the other side and I pulled off the gybe back, meanwhile imagining that I may have scored the mile, but in fact I was about 200 metres short. The wind was actually strongest on the inside, and I was so concerned again on the way in and nearing the shoreline that I sailed the last couple of hundred metres on my arms and out of my harness.

..It was double Dan weather, they'd both have loved itLaughing

Later I went out on the estuary. For a change I decided to have a go on a 25 year old F2 Axxis 258, that I bought off Patrick a couple of years ago for $80 and have never really bothered with. Its been lying in my garden for more than a year. Scrubbed it clean, put some serviceable footstraps on it, and a couple of non slip pads. ..It proved to be quite an eye opener, its pretty heavy, built like the Scharnhorst, its difficult to carry to the water, but it gybes like hell. I was shocked by the rate of turn to the extent it was catching me off guard and i was having to un-bank it mid way around gybes in order to keep up with it. Reckon an ace could pull "G" in turns with it.

Exocet 80L/55W, Point-7 AC-Z 5.8, Drake 30 ..at Charteris Bay ..2 Second Peak, and the (NM with a gybe in it) is at Charteris Bay

F2 Axxis 258, Point-7 5.8, Maui Magic 32 ..at the estuary  ..5 x 10 and the Alpha are at the estuary
