Good afternoon sesh with Leon, Dave, Mike and a few others. Luckilly someone had mowed an access ramp through the weeds to the west, as the usual foreshore had been entirely taken over by a large group of young fisherman called the 'Brown Water Champions'. Every year this time they have a 24hr fishing contest with the person who lands the largest fish (no gaffs/netys allowed) taking home a $450 prize pool. They were extremely organised, but from what I could tell, it was equal parts fishing, equal parts drinking beer.
Anyway, the breeze started at the usual time - really 7.0m weather, but I'm still waiting on it to arrive, so 6.2 will have to do. I planed almost the entire time, only rarely did I glug. A lot of South in it, probably best towards sunset, circa 17kts. I spent the day on the overdrive, Manta 100lt and the biggest fin in my arsenal, a 37.5 BPR.
The direction meant we'd launch just upwind of the fenceline, and the prevaling tack was near-parallel with the shore. For about three hours, we'd come chattering home and pass right in front of the fisherman's lines. I doubt they caught anything in that time. :)
Sadly I put down my dog in the small hours of Boxing Days so this was just the healing I needed. Looks like that might have been the last sail of the year.
2016. Year of the Bogan.
I'm calling it.
