Coodanup, WA, AU

That was fun. Choppy Coods with solid wind.

Out with Boz, Stretchy,  Jim,  Tim and Steve and a few other like minded people.

I left the best conditions to Boz so I expect a 38 2sec  and a 34 naughty 😉

Coodanup, WA, AU.  Many of the usual suspects out.   Was hoping to to scrounge a fresh Fangy fin from the man himself to do a comparisn with the 3d printed Green machine but seems there has been a frenzy on Fangy's and the Fangy furnaced fin factory is failing the fabrication and fashioning of fins so none could be found that are a facsimile of the foil.  Thus the next skunk works project was brought forward which involved board mods.  Instead of butchering the board in my basement I delegated the delicate dissection of the donor board (thanks Elmo) to Decrepit who did the dirty deed in his den, done dirt cheap. The board was thus ready to accept the experiment (tack compliant fin asymmetry) at 1pm but the final piece required printing this morning.  Everything was on track until the printer extruder decided to jam and there was no time left to fix and pick the board up.  Turns out this was a blessing in disquise.

Despite this hiccup I still planned to sail this board I hadn't used yet with the green machine and the dummy plug, adjust footstraps etc.   Went out and was happy board sailed well with the printed fin but was probably a little big for the choppy condiditons.   I waved at Richo and happened to glance back and glanced a look at a bright coloured 3d print floating in the water about 20 meters back.  Could only be one thing so stopped as quickly as I could and sure enough the dummy experimental plug had detached from the board. (seems almost impossible it could release)  Chugged back to try and find it but no joy, turned around again and retraced my steps, still nothing.  Turned around again and this time I spied it still floating.   Thinking I had maybe had a brain fart and put it in backwards I plugged it back in and the 16 rare earth magnets locked it in place.  Designed like this to be detachable and adjustable when on water. Did one bear away and this time I noticed the sea anchor deploy so immediately stopped and found it just clinging on.  Decided to call it quits for the day for this board and was glad I hadn't finished the project and potentially lost that.   Discussed with Decrepit some design mods for next iteration and went out again on standard board.

Sun came out, cruised around, still happy with how rock solid this 3d printed fin is in the chop so stopped a bit earlier to avoid the traffic and fix the printer.  102 RRD Xfire, 5.7 KAR, FF22 Green machine, then iSonic 86

Melville

Was windy just as I left work but dropped out by the time I got there... Figured it might come back so rigged

135 Radix, 6.6m omaha, 38cm MK3... Plenty of tide to go pretty much everywhere and that made it a bit lumpy. Struggling to get over 36 for the first hour and then some gusts came... super turbulent and short. Similar speeds on both tacks, with fastest 10sec going past the outer post in the chop... best gust I got for the day! It was niiiiice.

Impressive Richo how you can do that top speed and hold it in that chop for so long.  And tidy #'s for the rest of ya.

Thanks Jim 🙂

I felt like I had a poor sesh at Albany so wanted to come out all guns blazing today and push it to my  limit. A few times i felt like i was going to crash but at the same time it felt solid, it's a weird feeling but you just have to trust your gear and that it will keep you upright and flying.

I did decide to finish up early as I thought it might get messy so also best to know when to call it a day and feel satisfied.

PS.. all that bushit aside if you keep a close eye on Boz you'll see he reads da conditions better than most and if you stay in his shadow you might get lucky and get the bullets he missed and score better than him.

This really pisses him off but it makes you look good. 😜

Nice write up Jim, and don’t take Richo’s advice, 9 times out of 10 you’ll probably follow me into a sand bar as I’ve been known to do😜

Nice solid pace Richo...much braver than me! And well done the rest of ya. I take Boz's advice about following  him....he's a cunning  bugger and  can lead you into shallows where no man except a mad Croat would go.

nice one fellas... I had to take a coffee break half way through reading your post Jim. Glad you didn't leave any dolphin food behind though :) Richo you got the right idea... use days like this for training- when the conditions are on, you have to get used to being out of the comfort zone... sailing on flat water comfortably powered does not set you up for the big days. Good effort making the most of the wind!

Thanks Chris, yes that was my mode of thinking,  send it in conditions that typically I'm not used to and see what the gear and I can handle. Gave me a lot of confidence. It was actually more fun than sailing on flat water at higher speeds. You have to read the water conditions 10 to 20 mtrs in front of you and pick you line for  speed  and survival.  Get it wrong and it's all over.

Very satisfying. 👍
