Jan (2971km): 3rd Shimuni One Hour Slalom 2010. Simuni, Island Pag Conditions: NE bura 25-35 kts, choppy, rain Equipment: iSonic 111 / Warp 6.8 / MFC 36cm
The race sarted at 11 AM with stong bura and rain. After 30 min bura even picked up and some gusts were preety tough. Managed to finished 4th which came a bit as a surprise...a nice surprise...I guess good phisical condition paid out.... Tine Slabe won the race, Enrico Marotti came in second and Zdravko Cerovac scored third place...
I started well, among the forward group and managed to keep up and slowly make the progress forward.. After some 20 min into the race the conditions got more serious and at that point it seamed to me the time is passing very slowly....:) Everything got more harder and I had to keep telling myself to keep calm and not to push too hard (it is a one hour race) So I tried to go faster on one tack and rest on the other... Then I realized I overtook some of the competition and that I am on the 4th place some 200m behind Cerovac... From that point I started to push a little bit more and one one of the tacks the gusts really rised up and Cerovac went upwind and had some problems and I pushed more downwind directly to the mark. I pushed real hard and managed to break into 3rd place... Just before the mark, when I realized I will gybe to third place I got kind of exited :), I was also preety tired by that time and next thing that happened was a nice catapult and me flying through the air with some 28 kts of speed ...I bounced up twice of the water before I stopped... So I was on the 3rd place for some 20 sec. and then went back to 4th which I managed to keep till the end... :)) Somehow I thought I'd score a better 1hour avg but I guess I had too many slow spots (windless points after turning the marks) and that big fall during the race...
Anyway, it was great, a lot of windsurfers all over the place...some of them struggling...rescue boats flying around...rain poking the face....gusts and white foam flying around...just great!
Looking forward for the next year!
P.S. Here is a nice photo clipping showing my catapult which cost me a fight for the 3rd place against legendary Zdravko Cerovac, CRO-6, guy whit orange/white sail... Photos are saying more then words.... :)))
