Light northerly wind, grabed the big gear and just did some coastal cruising, sailed up to the mouth of the Barron River and did a down winder back. When I got out it picked up of course, nice sail Cool

Sandy Point, Missile S, Koncept 5.8, C3 Slingshot 21

Well, yesterday ended up being an expensive and eye opening day. This was my first try at real speed sailing on the Missile I got from Hardie a few months ago. Keeping it all together with a big sail on a tiny board in 30 to 40 knots takes a lot of work. I have even more respect for the guys who were going fast, they are real athletes. I won't be going back to Sandy in conditions like that until I'm fitter and have a helmet!

I only managed 4 runs yesterday so there was still a lot of tuning left to do to get comfortable. The combo was fast (for me) straight off though, with every run better than my old PB. I think if I didn't crash I would have gone over 40 for sure. But, I did crash...

On this run, annoyingly close to 40 Yell

I spun out and tried to bail by sitting down. I think the other side of my board must have tripped and I ended up tumbling over my gear, smashing my knee into the underside of my board and hit my head on something, probably the mast. This is the result

Plus a lump on my head and a sore and swollen knee. I had planned to stay down there for the weekend but called it a day and went home. Will have to get a quote on the board repair and try and decide if speed sailing is really for me. It wasn't really what I'd call "fun" yesterday. Very challenging and a big thrill though.

Nice Pb Jarrod, huge increase, It was afull on day at the pit yesterday, the angriest I've seen it in a long time. Don't through it yet, come down on a nice 20-25 knot day and you'll love it! you'll be hooked and never look back!Cool

Great numbers Jarrod.

Like Jacques said on a 25 knot day with the right tide you will do the same numbers on that gear without much effortCool

Definitely don't throw it in Jarrod!!  Yesterday was definitely the type of day where you consider sterilising the wetsuit afterwards.  As the others have said - get there on a 25 knot day where you can settle in and get set up and you'll never regret it!  Helmet is certainly a good idea though!!  To go out yesterday as first Sandy Pt sail is an amazing effort - cudos to you for getting out there and coming oh so close to the 40.

Wow Jarrod-awesome numbers .

A helmet/a very good wet suit & serious fitness all make things more manageable but its still a huge challenge

Well done!!

Great photos & hope you're ok !!!

Surprised Wow Squidy, bloody awesome mate, nearly the fastest on the team CoolCoolCool

I agree Jarrod it's not worth it at the expense of rooting gear, buuuuuuuuuut think about it, not a lot of sailing for a long time and then Sandy on a big day on a board with little experience. Think about the fact Sandy is Kato's stamping ground and he scores a Pb Wink Hang in there mate and as Jacques says go back on a nice 20/25 day and work up to it.

Some more experience and fitness and speed will be your oyster Smile

Soo close, Squiddy! Great PBs.Cool Bummer about the crash.Surprised Hope you heal soon.

We have all had bad days and breakages. They are part of the learning experience. Give it a few days and your next outing in challenging conditions will seem like a breeze. Hang in there.
