Lilacs, Albany, WA, AU

Patrik 145, 8.5 Turbo, 36cm Unifibre weedy (way to big for the weed) and about 15kts of wind.

Doing the tourist thing and noticed Jeremy out having a sail. The family seemed happy to sit in the car for a while and all was good.

Definetly a good spot for a  sail. Very flat compared to alot of my local spots. Well raked back and small would be the way to order a fin for this joint.

The normal spot to rig up is a bit further south from where I rigged but there is a nice area wher I did. Just a bit further to walk in and out.

Welcome to Albany PK :)

A few tips that I've picked up since I started sailing this area recently.

Firstly the rigging area as PK mentioned is a bit further south, about where the 3 squares are close together. There is an accomodation place called Lilacs (good place to say if your keen on windsurfing) once you go past Lilacs where the trees end there is a parking area on the left beside the bike track, park parallel to the road. Grassed area to rig on & it's ok you can ignore the quicksand sign.

Generally we sail in the area during the Summer months when the Easterly is the prevailing wind. Weed is very heavy & you will need at least a 40 degree fin. If the tide is down around the 0.5m-0.6m mark you will want something at a maximum in the very low 20cm to get full benefit, Delta fins are used by a few in these conditions. If the tide is say about 0.8m or more then you get away with 30cm plus weedies.

Tide readings http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/albany-tide-and-wave.asp

In an Easterly if you have the right fin, tide, wind combination then there is a good NM run running along the edge of the bank you can see from the SE corner down to where PK launched from. Just beware it does get shallow down that end & also the lighter colour weed patches at the Northern are quite close to the surface & they can be heavy enough to trip you up.

Wear booties! There are crabs, tasty but can give you a good nip, cobbler which can give you a nasty sting, some mystery thing which can also give you a bit of a sting that passes after a few minutes. Oh & there are Stingrays which hang around the area down near where PK launched from.

So why do we sail there? Flat water & 20 knot plus winds from October to March. People have done 40knots here & recently this is where Stroppo did a 29+ knot hour. I'm Morts on Seabreeze so if you find yourself in Albany for a sail don't hesitate to get in contact, Evets is the local guru & would be better to ask any technical questions of.

Cheers

If you do make it over let us know PJ. I'm sure the rest of the MM can offer advise as to which month is best to visit, Feb possibly better tidewise.
