QLD, AU, Michaelmas Quay....way out wide !!!!

2 intrepid sailors and a Seaman (Rick, Seaman Ed and I) headed for the paradise banks of Michaelemas Quay, banking a super low tide and 15kts. Early start as the northmen wanted to get of the highway b4 the traffic kicked in. With the BOM reporting a break down in the ridge, bringing fresh but lighter breezes than the 25+ that have been out wide for the past few weeks, we decided to head off on our journey.

With indications that it would be 10-15 kts, we all packed big, like BIG.....MMmmmm, BIG mistake.

1st Mistake - relying on a memory that was 3 years old. I seriously could not remember, or place where we had parked up, some 3 years ago. Any , the light will shine on that desicion later !! We found , what I thought was the original sand bar, but being pretty close to a full tide, it was a while before we could rig in the water, and the bloody wind, mien got, it was still 20 kts. Man, it was honking.

2nd Mistake - where we had parked up (actaully only 500m from where we should have) was a grave yard for gear. Ed smashed a fin, I have some rework to do on my 46cm. The place just didnt look right. I didnt remember this much carnage or reef in the area. What I remembered was long flats of flat water over crystal clear water and sands.

Decided that it was all a wasted time sailing and sat down, had lunch and a chin wag amonst friends, and wait out for the incoming tide and get out. At about the 40 minute mark, I decided to drag my gear out to some clearer waters and go for an investigation. Guess what, found where we should have been, it was lovely. Remember those long sandy flats with crystal clear waters, I found them !!! Any ways, I decided to waist an hr or so, just doing laps in a very light ESE breeze.

Finally the tide came in far enough for us to get the boat out without smacking any bombie's and safely headed home, with Captn Rick at the helm and Seaman Ed adjusting to life as a deck hand. Super top day with the lads and , despite some misgivings at times, we learnt and will better the experience next time.

Couldnt ask for a better day with mates - RIP Paul Green
