With some of thje kids we look after away on holiday I could get away for five hours after the school run this morning. With the wind off on the seafront and high water at approx 9.30 my only local option was Levington.I got there as the tide had just turned and with the gusty wind up to 27 mph I started with the 6.4,but in the lumpy up and down conditions this was never enough :( so after one of my straps came undone I came ashore and rigged the 7m which was better. As the tide dropped the water did become abit smoother but the wind was very up and down !!! I was sailing out and back from the small beach by the marina entrance in the deeper water. So this was about as good as I could find in Suffolk and once again the conditions where crap really but at least the sun was out and it was mild !!!

One of the gustiest days that I ever remember sailing at Brog! Averaging 18 knots but regularly dropping to around 10 knots and then blasting us with 30 knots. It was difficult to achieve good speeds because the gusts rarely lasted long enough to get a full 10 second run. I sailed for over 3 hours but half the time I was non-planing so I only covered 22.6 nautical miles!

On a positive note, I got to try out my new 5.1m RS:R EVO II and the 370 X9 that has been sitting in the garage for a couple of years. :)

Selected headcam footage on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57Ahz9qqDFA

Spot / Conditions: Brogborough Lake (England), 18 knots (gusting to 30 knots, dipping to 10 knots)

Tech Details: Navi GT-31 V1.4 (B0803T), GPSResults v6.90, Doppler, Cubic Spline.

Best session for me at Rutland this year although incredibly gusty at times.

Rigged the 6.7 as it was calm in front of the club but could see it was pretty solid up near the old house.  Probably should have used the 90 litre board but wanted to try the JP 104 with this sail for the first time.  Had a great time up there for a couple of hours but came back to the club to refuel and change down when it filled in to a solid 30kts.

By the time I'd had a quick bite to eat the wind dropped off again so went out on the same kit for another 1.5hrs, slogging at first but soon fully powered up.  This time in front of the club.

Very pleased with the max speeds reached but struggled to find any flat water to get good 10s times.

Top day and well worth taking the day off - must remember boots next time as lake bloody cold now!!

Nice video Mike - what length reaches do you get at Brog?

In a SW the runs are about 500m from bank to bank (i.e. including the acceleration and deceleration).

Typically I am able to sailing at constant speed for around 250-300m but it was less on Thursday due to the gusty winds.

Clever video. Mike thats either some advanced electronic wizardry or some lengthy video editing. How do you get the speeds/angle onto the clip?

Is it where you match your time to the vid with a little bit of guess-timation as to the start point or do you have some way of doing it that is far more advanced?

The subtitles are a feature of GpsarPro. It exports the GPS trackpoints in subtitle format (i.e. showing speed and angle) and video editing software can be used to overlay them.

The only trick is getting the GPS and video in sync... switching on the GPS before the video camera means that you can simply delete the early trackpoints. It's pretty easy to figure out which bit of GPS trace corresponds to the video by watching them on the screen. You can even video the clock on the GPS before setting out. ;)
