A quick blat for the maiden voyage on my new RRD XFire 90. I rigged for the forecast, (Koncept 6.6 and BP TypeR 35 fin) not the conditions, which caught me out a bit as I was doing a fair bit of very underpowered sailing. But we all know how it is....new toy, you just HAVE to get it wet.
Anyway, I was blown away (no pun intended) by how good it was to sail. Totally different to my Falcon. A lot more volume under the backfoot made it feel like I was riding higher in the water but that inspired confidence for some reason. Where my Falcon felt nervous in rougher chop and tended to bounce off the chop, the XFire just blazed a rock solid trail through it. Thye biggest difference though was the gybing. What a cracker!! Whether it was the cutouts (of which I have never owned a board that has had them before) or just a totally different board and shape, it just turned on a dime and powered away. Even in chop which is something I never managed to master very well on my Falcon.
It was gorgeous out on the water with quite a few guys out taking advantage of our early Nor Easters. Rick was FLYING on his new gear and will no doubt be a few knots faster peak than me but then that's nothing new
Bring on Summer, it's gonna be a doozie
