Exocet RS6 / RS4 - TR8 7.0 / 7.6 - Vmax 51 / 41 - Wind S 15-25 knots

Heat 4 NSW Freerace Series

Great turnout today at Marmong for the last round of the GPS series, with a good mix of Sydney, Central Coast and local sailors.   No wind at the beginning, but southerly came through right on schedule at 11:30am.   Did 3 x 30 minute freerace sessions.   Used the big board in the first one but dropped down to the medium size board and 7.0 for second race.  Luckily I downsized because a massive rain squall came through, with a thunderstorm off to the west.  Third race was a bit lighter but still well powered on the 7.6.   Thanks to everyone who came and to the guys who helped pull off the event and overall series, together with Remi (The Windsurfing Shed) and Andrew (Wicked Promotional Products) who sponsored the series.

Final GPS event, southerly came in onschedule at about 2025 knots. Race 1, casl70, 7.7, 46 fin. Nicely powered, planing all the time, pretty good.

Race 2, same rig but much windier, fell a couple of times but managed to hold it for the duration. Felt fast but likely was not, should have changed down but I knew it would drop off. It did, just after the race ended.

Race 3, unsure if it was going to honk or not. Took CASL62, 6.6, 34 fin & was going well till outhaul rope came undone. 5 mins or so rerigging it may have affected my result!

Grat turnout, fantastic work by James, Muz, & Byron to organise the series, a great success.

Southerly 15-25 knts. Big day at the water office today. Its been a good while since ive been in the back straps of a slalom board for more than 10

minutes without a break. Three half hour stints where one clocks up his/her distance and speed is recorded is the, your own personal goal.

i used a good deal of caution throughout the day. The second stint had the most wind and i think most of it went right up me. Out and back was enough

for me. The third leg the water condition was less choppy, wind still up and constant. A beaut day on the slalom gear. Thanks team leader and all.

How lucky were we . All smiles again though some very tired ones among them i.e.....ME!!!

Obviously l just went for distance and survival (never once for speed) Didn't quite make it but could have done worse.

Many THANKS again to the guys/girls who made this series possible by donating their free time and energy.

When l tell my friends in Europe they are amazed and very impressed that we have such unselfish and community minded people around here.

T H A N K  Y O U  !!!

Used my big 75cm w. Isonic wth 7.8 overdrive in the first with 41cm fin

7.0m overdrive wth 38cm fin in the next two races.

I should get a size smaller board really .

Well done guys, glad you could make it to Marmong.  And congratulations to Mick on winning the handicap - you were looking really comfortable out there and it showed in your results.

Now that's a bit more respectable! We were some of the GPS files..I've posted the combined files + new google earth. new I'd done more than 17kms! Cool

1st race -115 -75 wide freemove + 6.4m bullit + 30cm weedie

2nd time out for handicap stuff 79ltre falcon+6m OD -25cm tribal weedie.

3rd time out 6m OD -115 board -30 cm weedie. Could have used a pointer but wanted to settle the boards and don't have a 25cm pointer for the falcon.

Did the 1st half hr freerace then a bit of stuffing around with a few bearaways for the handicap and sitting out lightning for the  2nd freerace. 3rd missed 80% of it rigging the 6m , too tired and only did few runs in the last 10 minutes.

1st freerace-almost rigged the 7m as 13- 19kts on shore and a few holes. Played it safe and rigged the 6.4m bullit with 115 /75wide freemove as its my best board for the chop. 1st 15mins wished I'd rigged the 7m then it kicked in to around 20kts and glad I hadn't! Board well behaved but +50 over my weight so very tiring powered up in the chop..ugh..

I never fall in with that combo but fell in three times-2 distracted by avoiding others when gybing and the 3rd attempting a chop hop..grr. Interesting that I still beat my Wallis Lakes 1/2hr speed ..14.xkts today 15.35kts so I should be able to improve on that half hour if i rig sensibly.

Problem with only sailing the freerace is that your hr looks lousy as you sail 1/2 hr then sit out the other. Don't know how everyone else got such a good hr? The reason my hour was better was at Wallis I missed the start by 5 mins so I fixed that this time.

Buggered after the big board...My partner came and took some photos and I was surprised that I looked a lot better than I felt as I didn't really feel I sailed that well. Starboard harness lines weren't right and I just couldn't get comfortable.

2nd freerace it was a rush to downsize..thought about the 5m but rigged the 6m od.wind 15-25kts. Tookthe 79ltre Falcon out..Didn't go in the freerace just wanted a few bearays for the handicap section. Whoa should have rigged the 5m! Set off in a reach and flew! ( bummer photograher didn't get ant decent shots of with the faster gea).

A 6 yodell/yeehaa run Tongue outTongue outSurprised ...a few more bearaways but very overpowered.1st time I've sailed that combo overpowered in big chop so gybes were 'interesting'..not pretty but I made them.

A Storm had hit by now so it was glasses off so I could see. The rain was like hail in you face. Wish I'd had a camera as the water was flattened and it was very atmospheric with misty effect in the scalloped troughs..

Decided due to lightning to sit out the majority of the time of the 2nd freerace.

3rd freerace-Absolutely stuffed with heart palps(too much flawatersailing Embarassed so decided to take it easy with this one. Wind up and down. Took the 6m off for a 5m then chaged back to the 6m and decided use the big board as I'd had to swim the 79 in the last bit of 2nd race..

Bad choice as the wind came back in and I was a totally stuffed accident waiting to happen so I only did a few runs in the last 10mins of the race..

I was so buggered at the end I couldn't think straight..

Sold my tabou rocket to Gert who says I can ride it occasionally..Smile

A great day. I enjoyed talking to others. Heaps of sailors out and the wind came in as forecast. The 89 falcon probably would have been a better size in the first race but I didn't want a baptism by fire in those conditions. Renewed my interest in b+j but I've now sold my suitable board.,boo hoo.

Here are some pics.

These were all taken in the first race c 15-22kts before it kicked in to 20-25kts .Sorry they are  mainly of me as that's why he came but there are  a few general ones and he  got one of my stacks which is funny. The site reduces the size so if you want any full size ones let me know.

 John

 Me, Byron + ?

Bryon in the rain - it got heavier than this.

 John

Consdiering I felt my gybes weren't very good that day I'm happy with the pics.

I usually don't fall off that combo but did 3 x - I stuffed this chop hop so that was one..

Don't you hate it when you hook in halfway around? Laughing I usually don't but I was distracted avoiding other people as I came in to gybe

Only one he got of me as I took off on the 79 falcon. Pity it doesn't show the speed- this was the 6 yeehaa run..Laughing

Sue,  don't feel too bad, you beat Tibor for top speed & came very close to me. In fact, now that I think about it I think you should try less d/haul & move mast all the way back with a 16 delta, haRNESS LINES 6 INCHES FORWARD & BOOM 6 INCHES HIGHER.

Laughing Bruce.. I think next time i'll aim for comfort so I don't wear out so quickly..assuming the wind doesn't decide to pick up as we hit the water..Undecided
