Great Southerly Buster @ Primbee, NSW, AU

Sat at work watching it come up the coast. Got to Primbee and started rigging with Eckers before the S even arrived. Tezza was out sailing in the hot W and it had just vanished. We nearly completed rigging before it arrived. I nearly had the 7.0 rigged before I saw the observations at Kiama 10 minutes earlier. Luckily rigged the 6.3. Went out with the 6.3 Loft RB, iSonic W49 and my home brew 20cm weedie as it was quite shallow. The sail choice was right but big mistake with the fin.

The chop was quite big for the water depth and I had two big stacks at speed. I'm pretty sure one was above 38kts (I broke a few battens, stripped the thread on a footstrap plug but otherwise OK, if a little dazed. I had lost the fin and then tripped the rail on the very next wave. All happened very fast. I hit my rig and the rag dolled for a couple of somersaults. Ended up a good 6m from my rig in shin deep water. Feel very lucky, only some lost bark.

Went in and changed to the 26cm Unifiber as the water was just enough for this. No dramas thereafter until I had to pull the pin for pickup time.

Primbee, NSW, AU    Missed the best hour of the NW, one run down to Windang, then a drift half way back, then the S hit.

Super strong and choppy and to hairy scarey for me, watched Detlev and Mark get some great runs.

Tabou 95l Rocket  NP 5.8 Evo7  and nearly used the $$$$ fin. Maybe a bit calmer tomorrow.

Primbee, NSW, AU.

I am definitely lacking match fitness after these months out of the water but was keen to get out there and experience some extremely windy conditions again, especially after missing all the winter westerlies.

I got down there around 3:45pm when the southerly was in full swing and I watched Jetlag and Eckers screaming past in the choppy, shallow water with what can only be described as reckless abandon. I rigged small for comfort rather than speed but was still unable to commit to any bear aways. I think the self preservation instinct kicked in too much.

Thanks heaps Tezza for the loan of the boom, (I cant even remember how to pack the car properly). I wouldnt have made it onto water if it wasnt for you, cheers MateLaughing

PS. Jetlag I think it would be appropriate for you to change your name to JetstreamCool

Isonic 86, Loft 5.2m pure lip wave, BP 31 weed.

Wow - wild southerly buster at Primbee with Jetlag, Terry, Matt and Gerry.

Christened the new girl  - the Mistral Speed 95 with Lessacher 55 degree, 20cm weed fin.  Very happy with the first outing teamed up with the North RAM 6.3.

Strong and super gusty - full of bullets with wind ghosts ripping across the water from all angles.  Jet had a couple of big spills (most unlike him)  - hope the knee and the board are OK.

Happy to survive with kit and bod intact....

There should be a GPS category for fastest stacks. I looked up my tracks, 1st crash from 39.36kts peak, 2nd from 40.8kts. Should sleep well tonight.

Matt D, I didn’t catapult so my instantaneous peak was 39.36 during the biggest crash. Ploughed straight into my rig as the board stopped dead sideways. Took a chunk out of my knee when it somehow sheared off the foot strap plug on the leeward side (ie. the foot strap I WASN’T USING !!).
