Beachport, SA, 7.0 and Foil, Australia’s straightest roadtrip day 5, just another day in SA very marginal today so had to work hard to get some flight time. Great to see special Rob get some flight time on my gear and T2 gave it the Manta his tick of approval too.

After an absolute crap 7 days with the head cold from hell in residence I wasn't expecting much today apart from the thought that a nice sail will cure all ails.

Loaded the foil based on the forecast got to Novara and found a nice aray of white caps so changed the thought pattern (no biggy only two operating brain cells left and one of them is on an RDO) and decided to have a bit of slap and tickle instead.

First run did a run to the channel marker, PLENTY of Junky goodness, returned a bit of a tweek and then of to see how far the wind penetrated inland as the marine wind had the brereze just brushing the coast.

Well bugger me it's all the way over to Claudesville, so I played arouind there for a bit because the Lumpy junky goodness was MENTAL, must've been something weird going on with the tides as it was all over the place, but over in Claudesville it was smOOOOOOOOOOth with a Capital OOOOOOOOO there was even some glass over there as well but I wasn't going to venture anywhere near it as Pelicans were standing there.

Did another run back to see how it was accross the middle, finding it was worse than before decided to head back and play over in Claudesville some more which was awesome till my coordination went, so I headed back fully loaded through waist to chest high junk out in the middle.

Great fun, chuffed with being able to do an hour.

Great to see Ken turn up and go blasting out in the middle of the bay to get his fix of lumpy Goodness.

Forgot to mention that I watched the Stroppy Fella doing the Dawesville Yatch race on his foil absloutely monster the cats and other Quick boats.

Fangyland. The news came through that Helter Schelta was busy on the Scarborough beachfront sipping iced decaf lattes and had dispatched Crimson Splash to be the nominated Pesky on the Plot.

Initially, the two of us had the joint to ourselves and we both decided on Windtech SB64, FF22 and 7.0 metre sails, but it wasn’t until about three o'clock that Huey decided to join the party. With enough puff, I finally got to have a decent play with the SB 64 tail flex and get a handle on the effect of changing the settings.

Suffice to say, I had a lot of fun experimenting, and because the C-Splash was on the same setup, I could see the effect almost immediately. This may be just down to my bargearse sailing style, but I found that softening the tail allowed me to load up the fin more uphill. There was definitely a sweet spot and continued softening of the tail didn’t improve the uphill, but made the board seem draggy downhill.

The sweet spot for the fin, sail and water conditions gave a really nice balance of uphill ease and downhill assuredness. The weed is on its last legs, so the downhill run has abit of small chop in places. With a hard setting the board is up and flying quickly, but at speed, it becomes a handful concentrating on flying the fin. By slowly softening the tail I found the spot where the board was 'easy street' on the downhill and negotiating the choppy bits was a non-event. Very confidence inspiring and loving the SB64 right now.

Once I had everything sorted, I thought the I would try an FF22 with a modified Selig foil, that had impressed me with its impressively low and wide drag bucket. The fin was as slippery as a bucket full of electric eels. It was also as friendly as a bucket of electric eels. Methinks a bit more work is required before that fin sees action again.

A few more sailors joined us and at one stage it occurred to me that everyone on the water was using an FF22. Little head swell right there. Thereafter Dan went for the small board SB57 and FF20 and messed up the order of the universe, but it was still great to meet and have a sail with the C-Splash himself. Absolutely a Top Ten Fangy Day on the water.

Novara Beach, WA, AU

Lumpy's for some exercise and relaxation, and just wow! What fun!  First a quick chat to Elmo before going out and I totally forgot to ask all the important stuff I should have. Sorry Elmo, I had wind brain.

That was the most fun sail I can remember for a long time.  I didn't get hurt, not even a nip from a crab. I didn't break any gear.  I rigged and derigged on the lush new grass for the first time since the redevelopment.  The wind was plenty to plane the whole time.  I had 2 teabaggers and some dolphins for company.  It was hot and sunny enough to wear my my budgie-smugglers and there was a 3/4 moon out in the sky.  Blasting through the chop was so fun and I got plenty of airtime.  Some of the steep chop was enough to get pretty high with loads of hangtime hitting it at full speed on slalom gear.  Opening the taps through the chop was a really fun kind of exillarating. Not the gut clenching sense of dread I get now sending it in shallow flat water.  30 knots in 3 foot of chop is more fun than 40 knots in less than 40cm of water for me at the moment.

Was pretty tired by the time an hour had ticked by so headed in as soon as I was sure I had been out for more than an hour.  Need to get my fittness back.  Was great derigging on the lawn after a nice freshwater shower and some refreshment from the water fountain.  Took my time packing up and enjoying the sunset.  Very civillized. Then a fifteen minute drive home and Ru has a steak dinner ready for me. (I have to do the mash though)    I need more days like this.

Here's to hoping everybody else had a good day.
