I went for a paddle on my SUP and the wind was so strong I got great speeds.
Perfect angle and verging on too strong for the 4.7m. (so just right really ) One run I was not able to fully sheet in and commit. Fastest run was the first one and it showed a 44.7 peak on the GW-60. yeah right.... Turns out it was still the 43.9 2 sec so very happy with that. I cant remember doing a 5 x 40+ in the last few years, let alone a 44 peak.
On the 5th run I was jusr starting to get fully wound up and got a massive gust. The board wobbled and instead of missing a finger of sand by about 30cm, as I had planned, I hit it at 42 knots. SPLAT! Surprisingly, no hurty bits. I thought I would have broken my harness line for sure but it was still intact. Then I checked my harness and my spreader bar was gone. OK. That looks like the end of this session. I could have got my spare harness but when I saw Logit said I had a 41 5x10, and the wind was getting stronger (definitly gusting 40+), I decided to quit while I was ahead.
The water washing over the spit has created aprons of sand sticking out into the normal bank, We had to run wider from the bank in between them so it was a little but bumpier in places but my 18cm Tribal Assy. held on solidly.
Seriuosly, I would have been thinking of getting the 4.2m Koncept if I was going to continue. The wind was that strong! The course was a cloud of sand as I was walking back after the last run and packing up! .
This proved to me that Sandy can still turn it on on the right day. Guys like Spotty, Slowboat, Tony W and Brad A would have been pushing high 40's today.
A couple of other SUP'ers out today did pretty well as well.
CA40, Tribal 18cm assy, 2020 KA Speed 4.7m, GW-52.
Trackmap from GW-60 which give me a 44.1 2 sec but has higher error so used the GW-52 to post.
Closeup of where I hit the sand showing the shape of the bank when walking back. Top speeds were just to the top right of this on most runs
