Shelby (3731km): Early run down the PiT,then I had to wait for the tide which got me in just before 9. There has been a massive amount of rain here in the last few days(300-400mm in one 6 hour smashing),this made the water brown, full of sea grass and barrel loads of water running in,out and sideways so the water was about as turbulent and choppy as I've come across with this sort of tide and wind direction. Wind was a bit gusty and shifty and mostly square which should have made for great hours and alphas, the only thing was that I had to stop 6 times to get the weed off my fin in the hour and that is after I'd worked out that I was going slow and couldn't point too well. I had to go by 12 and there was few of the PiT hard men battling the brown weedy conditions when I went,so I hope the wind hung in! CA SL55,RSR Evil3 5.5,Venom 30. Wind seemed to be around 25 most of the time
kato (37642km): A mercy dash to the Pit to save the us from sinking into oblivion on the monthly rankings. Pete with a stingrayed ankle and me with a dodgy elbow it was going to be an effort. Lots of brown water and heaps of weed (475mm rain in 6 hrs) It slowly cleared up making one hrs better but the wind was fading fast, by 4pm it was 5kts. The best one hr had 4 stops to clear weed, i need to invest in a good weed fin one day. Great fun chasing Pete and John around with some very close formation sailing. Sl52, Ka Koncept 5.0,5.7,6.6, Venom 30,34 all used
Peter Johnston (8869km): Desperation stuff to try and redeem some honour. I should have had my stingrayed foot elevated all day or caught up on missed sleep from last night - I only slept about two hours due to fever related to the foot infection and throbbing pain from the foot - so instead I did what any good doctor would recommend and went and windsurfed on it for about 6 hours over 150km. Great way to flush out the toxins! Arrived feeling a bit shabby to find Shelby and Kato and later John arrived. Got to 1km past the necessary goal of 156km then staggered back to the car. Very gusty and shifty wind today which started about 25knots SSW I reckon then steadily dropped all day. Made the mistake of thinking I could use a non weed fin for the first couple of runs. When I stopped I pulled off enough weed to almost fill my helmet!! CA SL55 with C3 Venom 34cm then Lessacher 28cm weedie, with first 5m KA Koncept then 5.8m Koncept.
Sailquik (29582km): A very short sail in between looking after my school kids on camp. They were quite bemused by all the fuss about wind! Since I had a very short window I just tried for a NM and a few alphas. Was pretty underpowered on 5m Koncept, IS87 with Lessacher 25cm Duo speed. Even this fin cought big bunches of the ribbon weed each run which surprised me a bit. Water was dirty brown from all the rain.
Seahorse (2398km): Made the dash for the afternoon session. Luckily got there just as wind was fading but enough to have a go for an hour or so. Good to see team pulling out everything we could to keep the Taswegians in check. Shopping list was out. NM hard to get as had to have a gybe. Did mine on first run. Did a pretty good 1 hour with 1 stack and a couple of dud gybes - thought it might be better than the result. Peter was good enough to lend me a weed fin which was very helpful - need one!! Spent whole day on KA Koncept 6.6m and swapped from CA SL 58 with JP weed 31 to iSonic 122 with Venom 38 for the last bit. All fastest components were very much at start of session - showing how the wind dropped off steadily. Great to get a sail - was getting twitchy. |
