Primbee, 18-22 kt southerly

After initially being disoriented by the gustbusters alternative carpark arrangements, it was time to ceremonially pull the formula board from the trailer as a sacrifice the wind gods.  The sacrifice was well received because shortly after, the mild SW turned into a solid southerly!

A few runs but under finned and over-sailed once the wind filled in.  With a nice high water level, spend the rest of the afternoon in close and going fast(ish).

Gaastra Matrix 7.5 RAF (Flying the flag for RAF sails amidst a sea of cams!), Fanatic Falcon 104, Makani HaHaLua 33 (to start with), then project back weed speed 31.

Great turnout of kiters, observers, speedsters and gustbusters!

Primbee, NSW, AU    The wind came in pretty strong this arvo, just a bit of waiting with the bros,

very choppy out in the middle, but mainly stayed along the edge.

Lake Illawarra, NSW, AU. Atomiq 120L, Sv 7m Od, JP 36wf.

Fine afternoon with building southerly conditions and more wind than I expected, probably should have brought the 100L too. The 36 fin was not very happy in the flat shallow sections but great to see consistent conditions on the weekend and everyone out having a blast.

St Georges Basin, NSW, AU

Started early at palm beach sailing with my son Finn who's learning fast and now wants more and more wind. Finn finally called it quits when he was too cold to continue but he had learnt a lot sailing in the chop. I had the 7.0 rigged and ended having a great session out in the middle with my two bigger boards, very choppy especially when the wind shifted south east, but great practice for those choppy westerlies at primbee. I ended up sailing around to the ramp but the wind was pretty much gone by then.

Well what can I say but the swell/chop was massive out the middle at least a meter+ at times, but was loving those long runs, even going over the hangers was fun untill I couldn't get the sail over the swell/chop to do a water start. Yep will be looking into a life jacket of some sort for sure. Great seeing everyone out and enjoying the moment. As for me after a much needed sleep could do it all again.

It must be said thank you Fabien Vollenweider for a sensational board Tabou Speedster LTD 100 2016, Ben Severne for those Overdrives R6 and Olivier Ponrouch for those UFO fins, it's these people that make the sport fun/competitive with our mates on the water, and we are the one's that challenge each other and that is fun..😎

Hey Nudist, is a condition of your sponsorship that you loan out the equipment for others to try before they buy?  Wouldn't mind a try of those UFO fins!!!Wink

Sue - can't really compare the Makani to the Black Project (or Project Black - whichever way around it is) because I don't have them in similar sizes.  My Makani's are 33 and 38cm, great for pointing and grip in the mid lake chop.  My 104 Falcon really needs the 38 when it is rough and the fin is getting lots of air off the chop - the 33cm wasn't cutting it yesterday.  My Black Project is actually my smallest weed fin, except for my delta, at only 25cm deep, so an unfair comparison to the 33 and a 38cm depth Makani's. It's a great speed fin (fastest on Lake Illawarra yesterday!) - has never let go, runs equally well on my 80 and 104l falcons.  I'm contemplating getting the next size down for the 80l falcon, for a bit less draft again....Mark

Hey Mark any chance of helping a brother out, maybe put in a good word to those sponsors as my gear is getting a bit old now and it needs upgrading, demo gear will be fine I am not fussy as long as the sails are not red! New Caledonia here we come! Pay no attention to the old fox he is jealous coz he doesn't have la tan!

Thanks Eckers. What year is your falcon? What are they like in chop?

Mine are 2008..apparently the 89 is very fin specific  or something..current 30cm thin profile weedie is crap and I can't put any pressure on it so will have to get a 35cms . I think I will like the board a lot more when I'm game to hang out and really use the fin..

Sue - both my Falcons are 07, 08 sort of vintage - mostly light grey with red flame patterns down the sides.  You can see the 104 in my avatar.  The 80 is a year or two older again.  Afraid I can't give you any meaningful comparison in chop because I haven't ever tested similar sized boards back to back in the same conditions with the same rig.  I have no complaints about them...simple, timeless shape, no fancy tail cutouts, deck overhangs - good enough for me!
