Mistral Speed 41, Neil Pryde EVO5 5.o, Tribal Sym speed 21

First day of each speed season is always filled with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Will the speed course still be there, will it have filled in or washed away, do the tides still work etc? Then you get out there, stand on the sandbar and admire the rugged beauty of the place and all is well with the world. Not super windy but a good day to get the gear dialed back in. Spent a few runs adjusting harness lines and picking the best line down the course. Gradually the tide dropped and the water smoothed out , not great speeds a good start to the speed season afet the endless chop of the Gorge all year.

It's a good one, congrats Roo. It must have been blowing at least 30kts on average to get you going on that board and 5.0 sail..

Thanks Denis, it was gusting 30 and it you had to time the gust to get it filled in all along the course. Problem was it was too tight on the first leg then too deep on the second, had to be up to speed and hit the gust as you turned onto the second leg to get the high speed. Great practice for when we got a solid 35 knot day with a bit more west in the direction and some serious speeds will be set. You'd love the run!

Roo, that's great that you able to handle 41 board not in Luberitz channel.

what signals the start of your speed season?

The North Pacific high pressure that creates the Gorge winds in the summer moves down to the south towards Baja. This allows the low pressure systems to sweep down from the gulf of Alaska producing southern winds at the coast while the Gorge goes easterly and shuts down for westerlies. It also brings in the rain and snow for the mountains and valleys. You can see the typical speed season setup below. This is for the coming Wednesday.
