One of the most fun light wind days I have ever had. Gliding through the glass was sublime.
It didnt look that promising when I went out to have a look at the 5-mile just after midday. There were a few sailors out on big grear and they didn't look like they were planing most of the time. After a while I went around to Cockies to check what was happening and get a good reading on the South breeze. When I got there all the sailors seemed to be planing and I measured the breeze at 14-16 knots with the odd slightly higher gust. It seemed to be consisten at that stage so I made the risky decision to rig the 6.3m on the IS87 (61w). That proved to be spot on!
I fell off the plane a few times later on in big lulls, but most of the time I was planing out of gybes and trucking upwind in the gusts. I saw 31 knots and started to think I may get a 32/33. A couple of bearaways later I saw 33 and started to get excited! Next run a 44 and started to hope for a 35! We next run I got on a great gust and saw the Motion zip up to 35 and then 36 and then 37! Hard to belive as the water was perfect Glass. I had to check the readout a few times to believe it! LOL! The GPS-Logit phone also said a 37 2 sec, but in the end all the accurate motions said exactly the same, so that why we dont rely on the phones or Garmin watches.
Estatic with that for me. I actually didnt think my 87 and 6.3 would go that fast. I might use it more often now!
The wind went quite funky at the end with huge lulls between the best gusts. There seemed to be a couple of lanes where the gust swept down just about every time, and others where there was almost always a deep lull. It was interesting following other sailors upwind and wathing them get huge lifts and knocks ahead of me, just as I did when I got the the same places.
It was just really fun criusing around with all the other sailors in the glass.
