Carlisle St, Safety Bay, WA, AU

What a good day, half session on the mistral the other on the RRD. Reflex felt solid in 20knots of wind. JJ and Lao out for a blast too.

Carlisle St, Safety Bay,

Super fun day with Norts, Lao, Lunny and Tom briefly. Only about 18 knots of wind so no real speed but had a blast sailing through the channels on the Pengos bar. Had a nice NM drag with Norts Cool.

Stoked with the new sail, seemed to rig much better on the 430 mast.

Melville - Futura 101, CR 7.5, Drake 42cm - Started off as a light wind session, then overpowered.  Need to seriously improve fitness.

Decided to venture South with JJ, Recycle and Lunny.

When we arrived it was windy so rigged the 6.3 and the 91 but after working up to the Pengoes bar to find Lunny it had dropped away.

Headed back to base and couldn't be bothered re-rigging so plugged in the yacht.

Did an open water hour with legs up to 5km as some carnac practise.

Safety Bay provides a chance to do open water sailing without being too far offshore. Wind was 15-20 SW on the Garden Island reading but it was gusty as when I launched so went with an unusual combo of 6.3 Blade and 120L F2 SX 77 and a 33cm weedy(too light for my 91L). Rolling chop / swell (Rottnest reading about 1.5m)

track

Penguin Island bar to the other side of the bay is just under 5km on a run square to the wind. Yellow line is 4.5Km

A number of observations:

No way on a regular seabreeze that the Carnac race is going to be a reach in both directions. It is going to be upwind / downwind unless it is a proper Southerly. Yellow line is 4.5Km at the same angle.

possible track

Long legs on big boards in open ocean are hard work! I did 7-8 runs, some slightly upwind in about 50 mins for 32 kms total ( the supposed distance of the possible 2 lap race) and it was very physical! 6-7 mins on the same tack (about 4-5 Km) starts to get uncomfortable in those conditions and holding a line across the swell is much harder than a downwinder.

Will try and do a go at the actual sailing area next week if the conditions permit.

Well done Craig - another PB we don't mind but take it easy with those jellybeans or you won't have room for pizza.

Great work guys! Scored us some more points on a fairly ordinary day.

Mark, the suspense waiting for your post was killing me. I was thinking you might still be out there...

It sounds like that 75km was hard work. Can you post a pic of your track? I can't quite picture where you were.

Great ocean hour!

Well done on the naughty, Lunny!Cool

Pretty good corner from Speedy, too!Surprised

I did go back out to try some but was underdone on the 91 / 6.3 and all my attempts were way too wide.

Good to see Tomski flying by briefly too!

Mark that's one of my favorite runs down there. When I lived in Rockingham used to sail out of the back of the Mersey Point Kiosk and head out across the bay. Pretty hardcore on a windy day and a lot less weed than in close. Saw a few men in grey suits out the back, fresh penguin on the menu seems to attract them.
