Quick session after work to test out new C3 Venom 36cm fin.  Loft Blade 6.8, iSonic 94.

I was hoping to hit 50 knots today with all the good reviews that these fins have been getting, sadly it wasn't the case.  In fact I'm starting to think that my lack of speed might be caused by... *gasp* me!! Surprised

This fin was the final piece of the puzzle.  Now I have:

  • Slalom board (iSonic 94)
  • Speed sail (Loft blade)
  • Quick fin (C3 Venom)
  • Carbon boom with adjustable outhaul
So why am I still so freakin slow?????

Tried to get the board flying on the fin, but it didn't really want to do it much... as soon as I tried loading it up the fin would let go and spin out.
I think the main problem is that I'm so used to weedies that a pointer just feels weird.  Might take a bit of getting used to I think.  Also the only place I felt confident to go really broad was in the middle of the motorcross track, too many sails and kites in close.  Might have to follow Claude around for a bit I think.
Day was made a lot better by meeting a queensland sailor who I'd only met once before ... over a year ago in Queensland Smile

oi nebs... I dont think its just you. No surprises you were having trouble on that combo if the 36 venom is anything like the 38 I tried... I have a couple of fins that I dont really use any more that you can try next time.

Nebs, got the same prob, My 36 pointer (max's out generally about 31) is 4 knots slower than my 36cm freeride weedy on my 104L.

Done the swap on the same day, similar conditions and the veedy is definately quicker, got me stuffed

Hey Slowboat, now there's an offer I can't refuse!

Snides, the 36 didn't feel big at all... it would be good to swap it around with some other fins to see what works best for that sail though.

nebs, i used to have the IS 95 (loved that board), i would use a 7.5 with a 34 fin, and 6.5 with a 32/30 depending on wind. i never used a 36 so maybe its holding you back, especially with a 6.8 ???? seems a little large

Hi JC, thanks for the idea. I've had people tell me that the fin is either too large or too small, depending on... I don't know, the phase of the moon or something. Boogie at C3 recommended the 36 over the 34 due to his testing, so I got the 36. I have a 30 as well, I'll try that next time and do some proper comparisons.

The venoms in larger sizes are quite soft. They keep the board down in powered up conditions though. A bit like using a smaller fin. I'd use a smaller fin with less drag. Nebs I have a 34 you can try.
