Quick blast at Melville.

Super low tide. it never ceases to amaze me even though we all know there is a big bloody sandbar I will always have to test out how shallow it really is!

I almost changed my mind and went home 3 times while rigging.....amazingly I seemed to be planing for most of the time I was out.

Fun on the big gear

Lucky Bay in varied conditions.

Futura133 7.5 Overdrive 40 Drake slalom

Arrived a bit late but what a great day,a sign of things to come.Toby some of your enthusiasm is starting to rub off. Shame you couldnt be there in the arvo. Managed to get the 7.5 overdrive b4 jet and it was sweet but I felt guilty later as he would have bled a few more knots out of it. Oh well! Next time.

nice day at lucky bay, quite gusty but good in the gusts.

used 6.5 overdrive, isonic 94, 30cm vector maui slalom fin. Would have been better with the 7.5 overdrive but someone nicked it.

nice to meet slappa, good to get another guy on the team.

i remember what a girlfriend once said "why do you want to do that? sand gets into everything!!" and it does !!

So a dawn desperation revealed Melville the millpond. So The beach- Port Beach actually. Very short session, waterstart gybes every one, and my forearms were stinging!! So woosed out and headed back to the beach. 683m walk of Shame! Convinced myself to go again, and breeze spiked 22 knots so un rigged 6.5 to go 4.5 and..... it fell off to 12/15- stuff this home for coffee!!

JP FSW 94, JP 36 weedy, 6.5 Gaastra NitroIII - setup felt good, shame about the arms- harden up princess!! (2nd time on board and 2nd time ocean.)

Toby Toby Toby what are we going to do with you? Your boundless enthusiasm is starting to worry me.

The 683m walk of shame could have been a 683M swim of shame so thats a BIG win.Laughing

If you keep this up you will have to enter the LOC in the elite divisionWink

Keep up the good work.

Toby,

I want to try sailing in the ocean. Were the waves very big at Port Beach?. Were there any other sailors out? Where do you reckon I should I try sailing in the ocean for the first time?

Hi cheryl

You should just give it a crack its much less difficult than you think

There are a few easy spots to start out in cockburn sound. I reckon the south end of south beach or further south into the sound are a good start.

Port and leighton with no swell are also a easy way to start. The wind is much more solid than melville on most days.

Hi Cheryl, what he said and its a different beast- water starts, hooking in, airborne.

A:Wave size: beach break 2 foot dumpers, swell yes, waves in ocean 1-2 foot.

A:No others out at 6am, not even further north.

A: Port beach seemed an easy option as the car park is 50m to the beach. Leighton might be all right. South Cottesloe means the walk of shame is on rocks. Pinnaroo point is good.

Tips: From my surfing experience, timing the take off from the beach so you hit the break between sets is good. Looking at where the breaks are is important- do some watching first. If un prepared a 2 foot whitewash in the trench before the actual sandbar, can get you washing machined. Pick a good day- take a friend- I was really cautious as I had no buddy and the beach walkers were not going to save me!

give it a go- set a challenge in the Southsiders ?? or get up early on the weekend and we can buddy up. email me on seabreeze username: tobyhodgso

You thinking about the Lancelin Ocean Classic too?

Cheryl

I would also suggest Safety Bay - nice and shallow inside the sandbar, heaps of wind in summer and if it all goes wrong, you just get blown back to the beach. Little chop as well helps and heaps of sailors around (although that can also be a hindrance ) Port / Leighton are great for an ocean sail, but Safety Bay might seem a little less daunting at first physcologically (i.e. bay v open ocean).

Make sure your set up is right (in terms or harness line position and length, mast track, boom height), sail with a buddy and have fun ! once you master the ocean, the river will become second choice most of the time
