Shelby (3731km): Arrived at the PiT at 6.30am,tossed the dog out of the car and sat there in the pitch dark and pissing rain wondering what was going to motivate me to rig up..? The rain backed off just before dawn and I flew into the job of rigging and turning GPS's on so I was on the water and straight into a really fun session The wind was squally, the lulls were short and it was mainly ESE but a pretty full sort of wind for 16-27ish. RSR5.8,CA SL55,Venom 30.

Seahorse (2398km): Area 45 session on CA SL58 with 5.5m stealth early and a quick squirt on the new (to me) CA44. Unfortunately my second shot at the NM run was just short of the mile so only the first one counted which was a bit light and broad early on.. Think we need a little more south for this mile to be perfect - had a very tricky chop once the wind picked up and the tide was turning? Caught me out on the 3rd run and had a big stack testing shoulder and helmet. Peter helped me push the cams back onto my sail and then I went up to the other channel to see what it was like - bit calmer there but once again chop was tricky broad and not much bank showing. Glad to have been able to get the 44 out - loving how much easier it is to get going than is50. Hopefully Peter, Mat and co get some good results too..
Peter Johnston (8869km): Yeehaa! Finally pushed out a better NM. Very happy . Managed to strike Area 45 (in more ways than one ) with really good conditions - 25 knot approx ESE wind and low tide for a fairly smooth run down the 1.2 NM run. Still a bit of rolling swell down the run and a choppy section about half way that got the better of some of us today! - but mostly pretty good. Big crew of sailors out for a cold, wet wintry day - about 4 Pit Crew and about a dozen from the Inverloch sailing club/Southerly Busters. Great to catch up with all the crew. I think I had more stacks today than I've had all together in the last six months. I found quite a few sand banks - the hard way . Catapaulted a few times, broke two harness lines but still a great day. 2007 JP Slalom 85L, 28cm JP slalom fin, 2009 KA Koncepts, 5.0 and 5.8.
Mal Faulkner (9976km): thought i had 5 nms to choose from but had NONE. too many invisible shallows for my sense of self-preservation, specially the 6inches toward the end of the nm course. otherwise a good day at mahers with half the pit crew and nearly all the local team. great commitment & courage peter and well rewarded. rs6/5.4, torquay51, tm45/26sym.
Ado (4489km): Carbon Art SL55, KA Symmetrical 23 Speed, KA Koncept 6.4. Less than three weeks after having an apricot sized tumour chopped out of my neck, I was rearing to go and wasn't disappointed! Area 45 proved to be a lot of fun and required concentration to miss the sand banks - but what a reward! Lack of experience here meant that I missed the NM by 200m so next time I'll have to go deeper. The 28 knot NM has a gybe in it . That's the fastest I've sailed in this spot so I can't wait to do it on 30 knots with a speed board and 5.0!
Well done to Peter who was smoking down the course and spitting catapult sand with a smile on his face! Keen to see Matt's post. |
