bit of a dissapointment in relation to forcasts again,(glad i got a resonable sail yesterday)

managed to successfully sail the worst part of the day.

got to peli around 10ish with no wind decided to head home and get my tax sorted

noticed the wind was up..raced back to peli to see it die again before my eyes..went out anyway..

it was crap..

Wicked day at SP. Tuning mission for me, trying a lot of stuff. I reckon the wind was a pretty solid high 20s to mid 30s. Not much more because it was pretty easy to sail back upwind through the channel. I didnt do any walking except to get back at the end when the wind died. Sailed a few more kms than normal! No wonder I feel a bit tired today.

Sailed the 42 all day, started on the 5.5m EIII. First run was a misfire, but hit a good gust on the second for a 46kt 10 sec and 47.5 peak. I think thats a no weight jacket PB for me and I've dropped to 87kg. After that I couldnt get the power down and was hitting 45/46 peaks. Meanwhile Spotty is pulling out 48 peaks and 47 10 secs so I knew something was up. I sailed back and put the 5.1m on, did a few runs on that, adjusted the harness lines and downhaul, did a few more runs, but still was a few knots slower than spotty, my reference point :). I watched him down the run and he looked so steady and so powered up I thought the sail was going to explode, MI style.

Went back to the beach and changed to the fin I used last year to get my best times. That was even slower. So I was scratching my head trying to figure it out. New board, sail, and fins for SP so what was going on? Right at the end I decided to take a punt and stick in my old KA20 asy. The tide was racing in and the wind dropping, and I had a plane to catch. I managed 4 runs on it and 3 of them were my fastest for the day. I literally picked up more than 2kts, the board was releasing closer to where it should have been, and was praying for a few gusts like we had earlier. I waited around on the sandbar for an approaching rain squall hoping for a cracker run, knowing my window for making the last flight of the day was closing and I was already eating into the transit time margin. Its normally a 3 hour drive to the airport... The squall was a fizzer and the wind swung westerly so rather than losing time wading back to the car from the start of the dunes, I thought I could take a shortcut via the inlet and straight to the cars like I did on Tuesday. I got to the channel marker on the inside of the inlet... and the wind died.... NOOOOOO!!! Swimming for a few minutes... was sure I was going to miss my flight.

Fortunately a low 20s bullet came through and I pumped like crap with remaining energy to get planing and plough back over to the sand bar, further downwind from where I started. By the time I got back to the car the tide had raced in and it was getting sketchy for getting out. There was no time for anything other than get out of the inlet, throw stuff in bags and beeline it to the airport. Matt drove like a champion in his van, and fortunately we had a clear run with traffic. I made it with about 5 minutes to spare before checkin for my flight closed. The airline is very strict with checkin times... On the way out of Perth I was 5 minutes late and they wouldnt let me check in- even though the plane was delayed about 20 minutes. I had to sit in the departure lounge staring at the plane I was meant to be on for half an hour before it boarded and took off. Frustrating. But the flight home was the last for the day so it would have been a mission if I missed it.

All up it was a brilliant trip. Thanks Matt for your generosity and hospitality. Was great to hang out for a few days. Also thanks Andrew (Daff) for allowing us to sit by the fire at SP Central. Damn it was cold!

EDIT: should also mention that I wore 4kg of lead at most. Helped a lot with my stamina. Started with no lead. Wore the jacket for a bit of warmth... there was sleet hitting the windscreen when we got there, and plenty of stinging hail in the few squalls that came through. Hardly rained at all.

Gotta love the KAssy 20 mate. That was a great design. Maybe you need to revisit that concept - seems like some of the prototype directions haven't paid off. Nice numbers and great to see ya again! Wink

Great to see you again Slowie and thanks for the kind words. No PBs for you this time, but still speeds us mere mortals can only dream of! Great stuff. That fire and hot drinks at Daffy's sure are great end of session treat!

thanks guys, and glad to see you're OK Peter. I'm sure you'll be back in action soon.

Was great to see Spotty playing the efficiency game. You were smoking on heaps of runs in the middle of the day and even at the end with less wind and more tide.

I sussed a few things out about the fins. You really need different fin setups in different conditions to make the most of the conditions. The fins Ive been using work great in places like Karpathos, and locally (for various reasons), but the high efficiencies and length of the run at SP require a different design to get the most out of. I'm stoked to see so many people enjoying my old design over there. The newer design works great here (Perth), and in places like Karpathos. I'm so glad I tried my old ones again. Cant wait till the next time... who knows I might even have some new toys to try by then Tongue out

Again you and Spotty kicked our asses down under mr Slowboat, flash back from 2010!
I personally like the international GP3S ranking more with different flags, until now it looked like a dutch national championships. So keep those sessions coming!

The 5,5 E3 must be the perfect sail if you had only 35 knots of wind, both Hans and me are sailing it with not to much downhaul and outhaul on the standard X9 370. Like this we have the power we need and the sail was also prooven faster compared with other settings. Your session was already super fast but like you mentioned, youre benchmark for the day was faster and this keep you motivated to do better next time. Tuning new gear takes so much time to get the few extra knots out of it, so you need to visit more windy places to prepare for these record days....

Hope we can join you guys next time, please give us a message a few days upfront when you think it will be epic again.

Hey Jac, you are right about getting the settings right. We were very lucky to have such solid wind for a few hours, and with a manageable tide that kept the water manageably flat. The curved bank is great for getting ideal conditions for at least some of the run despite the wind angle changes. I was using the 5.5m at first, and it was really smoking. I got my fastest ever run without a weight jacket on that despite poor (in hindsight) fin selection. If I used my normal 8kg weight jacket it would have been the right choice for the rest of the day too I think. But I also wanted to suss out the 5.1m for those days where the wind really does get to a solid 40kts+. Its good to know what your options are and how they work in different conditions. Every day is at least a little different over there so it keeps things interesting. I hear that La Franqui is going again, so good luck when you get there. Its nice when the top spots change hands a few times a year. As for the conditions, at this time of the year the forecasts can change at the last minute and it stuffs things up. I was lucky to be able to stay another 4 days for a secondary front, when the first epic forecast changed within an hour of me booking my flight. All the available models were in agreement and unusually stable for a few days prior to me booking. But we'll let you know next time if you want to take the risk. The systems later in the year and through summer seem to be a bit more predictable. Hopefully one day I'll get back to europe to play on your turf!

cheers Spotty, was awesome to see you fully lit on that 5.0m... scary sight to see a freight train hurtling at you at 89kph... I still dont reckon wind got over 40. Maybe it hit 40 but it was pretty damn steady overall. Reason I say that is cos I didnt see much frothing of the water or any big jets of sand like you get when its over 40.

I've done 46 a long time ago on a relatively crappy 9kg board with accurately measured windstrengths every 150m as I went past. It was 29-32kts. Fully powered 70% of the run on a 4.4m. So thats a bit of further proof that a cold, moist, solid breeze helps a lot with increasing the power and efficiency (board speed/wind speed). The most crazy speed conditions I've seen for years. Totally stoked to share such a great day with the guys who got PBs. Insane speeds from guys who arent built like ore trucks.

Hopefully I can get back over there again soon. The year isnt over yet :)
