4797 days ago Lat day of Speed Fortnight and the wind finally tuned it on! Big time!
But it was not an easy day at all. The wind was very up and down and squally. The down was 15-20, if that, the couple of squalls were 35+! There was a big squall just before I rigged up but from what I heard most of the other sailors missed it too. I had a couple of runs at 37-38 underpowered with the 5m and when I saw the cloud coming I grabbed the weight vest and took off on the back of it. Missed the strongest wind but was still waaay overpowered. I could not sheet in fully even right off the wind. Still a 43.7 peak and 42.56 10 sec. By the time I walked back the squall and wind had passed.
We stood around for almost an hour before the next squall came. This time I was ready with the 4.4m Koncept and went right on the start of the squall for the flattest water but still felt like I was getting thrown around big time. I had a spin out at the end of the run, looked down and saw my rope was unhooked so I threw it away to be safe. 43.02 peak and 42.01 10 sec. I hurried back and managed to get a second run in the squall. This time I felt more stable and it was the best run with 44.57 peak and 2 secs identical and 43.694 10 secs.
No more squalls and the wind went very broad, West to WNW. A couple of very difficult runs at 39's 10 sec and that was it. The tide was rushing in, the whoopdedoos were huge and it was time to excape before being trapped. The frustrating thing is the wind has picked up again to 30-40 and seems a bit more WSW now, but the inlet is super flooded so even if you walked in there would be no bank to run.
CA 40, 5.0m and 4.4m KA Koncepts, KA 20cm assy fin.
A good turn out today including Peter Wittenburg all the way from Europe!
I'm sneaking up on the other old guys legends!

4797 days ago 1 categories Tough day at the Pit, very gusty and windy with very little results.Did lots of very scary and tough 37/39kt runs in the chop and watched Chris A (WA) back out of the run of the day.Whinged that he had up a 6.2 and it was a bit windy, to be fair the sand was at least double mast height and the water had turned to smoke. Soft . Got a run in with a squall on the 5.7,couldn,t sheet in properly, made it to the end with a 43kt run. Got smashed comming back up wind and spent a bit of time trying to waterstart in the squall. Stuffed. Couldn,t find any more good runs on the incomming tide so i jumped onto the Sl52 with the 5 and just free sailed for an hr. A great end to speedfortnight. The drive back home was wild with big squalls comming through. One squall dropped 2 trees in front of me and smashing a pine cone into the windscreen. Missed all the body work but the window is F%$#ed
Could have been at lot worse

4797 days ago Absolute bitter sweet day for me. Had no room in the car and have no speed sails at the moment so the only sail I had was the 2012 6.3 Race proto. Looked a bit windy for that so Spotty offed to swap with me and I used the 2012 5.8 Koncept proto. Started slowly struggling to pick a gust but then the wind picked up a bit. Peter Johnston wad kind enough to let me use his 5.0 koncept so took off on that. Did a pretty nice run with a 43.5 on the screen and nearly a 43 10 second and it finished with a nice crashed dismount in the scary waves at the bottom of the course, always good for a laugh..
I then fluffed around for a while as I do and in the process must have hit my GPS button on something and changed the mode. A huge squall comes through, horizontal rain the works. AMAC says, grab my 4.4 (2012 4.4 Koncept proto) I take off for what had to be the run of my life. I was absolutely smoking, board felt amazing just sitting on it,s tail and so in control. Sail felt superb, absolutely the fastest I have ever been on a sailboard. Dismount , look at the screen in anticipation, WTF It,s displaying "SAVE to CARD" Ahhhhhhhhhhh. Switch it back on to speed, do a max speed restore, my previous run was showing, it didn't record ... FAAAAAAAAAAAAA.............................
Well at least I just managed to pip my best 5X10 but bitterely disapointed as it had to be a 45 on the screen.
Next time!!!!!!
I have ended up with 2 files for the day, the 5X10 is from the combined file and hey this is a good one , apparently I did 14507.24 KM today. Kato, your soft

4797 days ago Not the quite the epic day it could have been and remarkably varying conditions with huge wind strength variations, big swings in direction and everything from warm sun to hail. Walking back up the run in the teeth of a 40knot squall getting blasted by hail and sand and trying not to have the gear blown out of my hands was a highlight! A few good stacks added to the entertainment (not me this time thankfully!) and a couple of old hands who seemed to be bored with sailing so opted for some extended swimming practice in the channel (you know who you are! ). Nice to see Peter and Ado make it over from WA - I hope the trip was worth it. No sign of Stacey and Red from Geelong though?? Good to meet Peter from the Netherlands!
Disappointed to still not get a 4 on the dial but still feeling like I am holding back a bit and haven't fully got my mojo back. Memories of a very unpleasant week in hospital still haunt me! However the ice hockey helmet is working great - excellent visibility and quite comfy and light. It even keeps out the worst of the blasting sand thanks to the polycarbonate visor.

4792 days ago Squally session with all the seasons in one day, missed the the 1st squall, but we were juggling a few of the protos around when the second one hit. It was like the Sunday before with the 7.1 Race in hand but this time it was the 6.3, and the dune smoke off in the distance was making me quiver a bit again. No time for the 5.7, here we go again off into the oblivion. Was getting raised out of the saddle nearing the end off the dunes where the 'nomadic slog thru the sand' party of Amac, Daffy, Tom and Ka's Peter Wittenburg videoing were. Will try to upload later.
I pass Daffy the nose lifts and the fin later releases just as I near 40, tail starts going sideways....OH FOOOOOOOOK..my wettie's going to need a clean out.. I just hold still for 60m going by the track data, and slowing to around 37. The reliable Ka23 asym fin then autopilots back under foot, and the board straightens out, I smash the 6.3's pedal to the floor and get settled, getting upto 45.58 dop pk and holding on for a solid 43.54 500m woohoo!!. I will remember that one for awhile..... and the other 2 squalls on the 2012 5.8 Koncept proto where I did one of my fastest longest wheel stands at the top of the run 500's were 43.2 & 43.1. A couple of other runs of 42 and 39 to round out the 5 as the tide turned.
A testing day of sorts in more ways than one for most, just should of been on the 5.0 in those squalls to make the most of it, good to catch up with Peter W, PD and Ado, glad the weather co-operated for the trip over.
