4041 days ago 2 categories What a great day at Horst. All the time i had the Deep Purple song smoke on the water and the Doors sond riders on the storm in my head. The smoking water which was lifted as high as five metres for minutes in a row in the strongest periods of wind combined with the sun and clouds made for a sight I will never forget. In the lulls we could set our runs and it was clear many guys were smoking nearly as much as the boiling water around us.
Before the wind picked up to epic heights I was doing my very first run ever on the lovemachine 44 and it felt great. The speed was there when I compared to other riders and the board felt sweet. In the third run I fell into my sail while starting up in the super shallow water. the cross batten broke and basically before the big winds picked up my day was gone. The whole shape and support was gone and the sail looked as if I was sailing with a 4 sqmtr.
I decided to go back and at least give tne new Lovemachine Luderitz board a try. It's an ASY 42. In the big winds I sailed with a near unsailable sail and still the board felt great. Â In the gusts up to 60 knots it was nearly tonr apart and the batten was sticking out of the sail, the entry was completely flat and the sail twisted about 40cm at the boom. Still the board got me up to 84km/h. It was an utter shame I missed the strom of the decade because of this but it was great to see Serge flying and getting up to the highstest open water speed ever set by a windsurfer (as far as I know). Michel was flying as well as many more Horst speedies. It was thrilling to watch the guys going for it and that's the feeling that remained at the end of the day.
I hope to fly next week if everything on the business side works out like planned. Looking forward to meet other International speedies present in Luderitz.
