A great afternoon at Queens.
The wind was pretty light when I got to the beach so I took the opportunity to try my new BP 42.5. It's much more powerful than the stock 40, really bringing the board to life in light winds, and giving a firmer feel underfoot. I only got a few runs on it though as rapidly increasing wind and a certain amount ejection off wave-tops forced me in for a something smaller, along with a bit more outhaul, and some more downhaul. Time to test my new 37.5 (yes I bought a lot of these fins!).
With some decent wind the combination of Scross 116, Cheetah 7.5 and BP 37.5 was just gorgeous. The board went much faster, but the control remained superb. The sea state was typically lumpy Moreton Bay swell-chop, but this setup swallows it, giving you that sweet feeling of freedom and invincibility as you rocket through the water.
The gusts continued to get stronger, and I had some nice fast runs through "Stingray Alley" out towards the tripod. The number of rays out there was staggering. I saw probably half a dozen on each run indicating the the water surface was comprehensively littered with them over a broad area. The good wind urged me to keep on going though. The waves were making big long, green troughs, just begging you to cowboy-up and run down them full-tilt. I was able to join two or three of these troughs together for long flat-out runs with crests rising up on either side. Magic.
It was silly to push hard out there with all those obstacles in the water (especially with a powerbox under me), but I have never been praised for my common sense and this day would never come again.
It has taken some time for me to get used to gybing this board as it is quite different from my old 2008 Scross. I think I'm getting it now though. It is a bit more technical to gybe and likes the sailor to stay up at the back of the board and flip the rig as early as possible. Can't be lazy or timid with this one!
